Best Way To Clean Jewellery To Prevent Virus Spread

Jewellery & Watch News

Amid all the talk of social distancing, washing our hands regularly and staying at home, there seems to have been little if not no advice on how best to clean jewellery to prevent virus spread. Studies have proven that the COVID-19 virus is able to survive on surfaces like metal and plastic for up to 72 hours, so we can’t stress enough how important it is to give your favourite necklace, engagement ring and trusty timepiece a good clean!

While hand sanitizer and soap is all well and good for your hands and disinfectant spray works perfectly on hard surfaces and door handles, what is the best thing to use to clean jewellery? Thankfully, the things you’ll need to clean your rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and watches are easy to find in most households – saving you another trip to the supermarket!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • A bowl
  • Warm water
  • Mild dish soap
  • Soft bristled toothbrush

To avoid the risk of losing your jewellery down the drain, we always recommend cleaning your jewellery in a bowl. However, if you feel confident enough, you can wash your jewellery in the sink too, just be sure to disinfect both after. Fill the bowl or sink up with warm water and mild dish soap and allow your jewellery to soak for a while to allow any stubborn debris to loosen up. Then simply take the toothbrush and gently brush the piece down.

Once you have cleaned your jewellery with warm water and soap, we recommend you use one of our handy jewellery cleaning kits to bring that unmissable sparkle back to the piece. We have a fantastic selection of Town Talk silver polishing cloths, gold polishing cloths, silver sparkle dip, jewel sparkle dip and diamond dazzle sticks all available to order direct to your door.

We don’t recommend using any alcohol sanitisers or any form of bleach to clean your jewellery as these may dry out any gemstones and lead the surface of the metal to crack. For the best method on how to clean your watches to prevent virus spread, we have done an entirely separate guide which you can read here.
