Slimmer, deeper, lighter – what to expect from the new Panerai Luminor releases from Watches & Wonders 2025 Geneva.
Florentine-based brand Panerai has always been the Italian Royal Navy’s go-to manufacturer for rugged military tools. The brand, founded in 1860, created a radium-based powder in 1916, which formed one of the key elements to its luminous and highly legible Radiomir model. In the 1940s, Panerai replaced this material with a much safer one, coinciding with the release of the Luminor watch, which was later released to the public in the 1990s. The Luminor watch became famous for its patented sandwich dial, cushion-shaped case and large crown-protecting bridge – a distinctive hallmark of the brand’s Luminor Marina sub-category. This year, at the 2025 Watches and Wonders event held in Geneva, the Italian manufacturer unveiled four new versions of the Panerai Luminor Marina. It now promises a staggering 500-meter water resistance, enabling you to take it to new unknown depths, plus a slimmer calibre, which now sits inside thinner case proportions. Let’s take a closer look…
New Case Design for the Luminor Marina Steel
Panerai’s legacy in manufacturing high-performance tools continues with the new 500-meter water-resistant Luminor Marina watches. Crafted from AISI 316LVM – 1.4441 steel, each model now promises improved resistance to corrosion and has been engineered to optimise strength and resilience since the special case metal has been remelted to increase its purity. The three new models sport blue, white, and black dials – the blue one also sports a stainless steel bracelet, debuting the brand’s PAM Click system for easy strap and buckle changes. The new models also showcase new and improved luminous material for a longer-lasting glow. Super-LumiNova® X2 guarantees enhanced brightness and a long, vivid glow that makes reading the time easy whether underwater or in any other dark environment. However, the most important point to make about the new Panerai Luminor Marina steel watches is their new thinness. Now 12% thinner, the models are designed to deliver better comfort on the wrist and create the feeling of a more compact design despite their broad 44mm diameters.
The Panerai Luminor Marina Titanio
Combine a 12% thinner case with a 40% lighter construction, and you have the new Panerai Luminor Marina Titanio – a titanium model engineered for ergonomics and comfort. The distinctive element of the Luminor Marina has always been the small running seconds at 9 o’clock, and, as one would expect, this feature remains at its usual spot in both the steel and titanium models. However, this model boasts a dashing green dial inside its cushion-shaped case, and it is executed in a stunning sunray brushed effect that picks up the light like a dream.
The cut-out markers and numerals have once again been treated with Super-LumiNova® X2, while the date window is beautifully bevelled to reveal a wheel finished in the same colour as the dial. The only other detail on the dial is the Luminor Marina and Panerai lettering, allowing the brushed texture of the lush green dial to take centre stage. All four new models are powered by the new Calibre 980, which runs at a rate of 28,800 vph. The movement, developed by Richemont Group, provides a 3-day power reserve once fully wound and is made visible through the back of the case.
The Panerai Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica
In addition to these new Panera Luminor releases, the brand has also launched the Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramic to coincide with its return as the Official Timekeeper of Salone de Mobile. The eminently stylish model features a sporty 44mm black ceramic case and is powered by the Calibre P.9012, which sits behind a titanium caseback. Its twin barrels ensure it can hold a longer power reserve of 72 hours. Coupled with a variable inertia balance, the movement is also more resistant to positional influence. Of course, legibility is key to the success of any Panerai watch. The sandwich dial features an upper membrane with cut-outs that enable the Super-LumiNova-coated hour markers to permeate through. The brand uses two types of luminous material for this model, separating the timekeeping features in green from the power reserve (between 4 and 5 o’clock) and GMT information in blue.
