Taking Care of Your Mental Wellbeing During Lockdown

Jewellery & Watch News

The world has transformed over the last couple of months as COVID-19 makes its impact on each of our daily lives, and not only is it having an effect on our physical health but it is taking a toll on our mental health too. So as our normal routines are forced to change, it’s important we adapt along with the world to support our mental and physical wellbeing.

Staying at home, self-isolating and social distancing from our loved ones has been and will continue to be crucial in stopping the spread of the virus. But social distancing is inevitably going to have an effect us on many of us psychologically, so it is vitally important that we learn how to support ourselves and support others during this time. Whether it’s boredom you wish to squash, or you are looking for some new techniques on how to manage your health and wellbeing, we have compiled a list of recommendations on how you can take care of yourself during lockdown.

Look after yourself physically

You’ll have heard it before, but your physical health has a huge impact on how you feel mentally. By sticking to a regular routine, eating healthy, sleeping for eight hours and exercising will all largely benefit your wellbeing.  If you are working from home, make sure you give yourself regular breaks that include some form of exercise. Anything as simple as circling the garden to get your blood flowing to joining in an intense Instagram live workout or learning a YouTube dance tutorial to get your heart really pumping will greatly benefit your mood and health.

For those of you who already own a fitness smartwatch will have witnessed the many benefits of these handy devices while in lockdown. Many fitness trackers will display your calories burned, steps counter and floors climbed, so you can get an in depth rundown of exactly how much you have moved during the day and if you need to start dancing around the house a little more! Garmin smartwatches - particularly the Garmin MARQ and Fenix 6 collections - are some of our favourites since they come preloaded with a fantastic selection of sports app and workouts for you to do at home.

Start a new hobby

Normally, we find ourselves struggling for hours in the day to try a new hobby or learn a new skill, but with plenty more free time on our hands during lockdown, it’s the perfect opportunity to do try something new. Getting creative like painting, sewing or knitting can be instantly calming for the mind while learning a new language or getting handy with woodwork will make you feel notably more productive. It has also been said that boredom can bring to life some of our best work; after all, William Shakespeare allegedly wrote King Lear during the plague and Sir Isaac Newton reportedly formulated the theory of gravity during quarantine!

Organise your home

A job many of us put off, organising our house doesn’t always sound appealing, but we promise that once it’s complete you’ll not only have a decluttered bookshelf or cupboard, but a decluttered mind relieved of stress. Getting tasks like this done while you have spare time may even help you gain extra essential minutes in the future, now that you know exactly where those shoes are kept, or where those keys are hiding! Gain a sense of control and reduce those overwhelming feelings by calming your space and getting organised.

Reduce your screen time

We can’t stress this one enough! Sitting and refreshing your smartphone on the latest COVID-19 news has never helped anyone. Yes, it’s important to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world, but it’s certainly not beneficial to our mental health to stay focused on this all day. Set yourself limited screen time on news apps and social media so you can concentrate on more mentally beneficial tasks like taking a long bath with your phone locked in another room or a fun board game where only real-life social interaction is invited!

Spend time outside

We may only be allowed to leave our homes for an hour of exercise a day, but it’s essential that you make the most of this. Leaving the behind the four walls of your house will instantly make you feel freer and remind you of some of the pleasures outside that bring you so much joy. If that one hour isn’t enough, don’t neglect your garden or terrace and enjoy the sunshine with your breakfast or take in the sunset on an evening.

Get lost in a book or film

Sometimes there is no better way to distract yourself from what’s going on outside than with a good book or film. Reading books and watching films is a fantastic way to relax and will transport you to another time and place, which is exactly what many of us need right now. And like us, we are sure many of you have a long list of movies and novels that you have been waiting to read for a while, so make the most of lockdown and get them ticked off your bucket list!

Learn to cook a new recipe

Cooking and baking is incredibly therapeutic and can prove to be a fulfilling experience when you realise it’s something everyone can do! Teach yourself some home-cooked recipes that can be used again in the future and give the family something new, healthy, and tasty to try. Whether you’ve always wanted to try and cook a homemade lasagne or you’re craving the sweetness of banana bread, keep yourself busy and get creative in the kitchen during lockdown.

Connect with friends and family

An essential part of maintaining your mental wellbeing during lockdown is keeping yourself surrounded by friends and family – even if that means virtually! We are incredibly lucky as a generation that we have so much remarkable technology to keep us connected. Check in on your friends and family and let them know exactly how you are dealing with quarantine – and make sure to be completely honest with them so they can support you and vice versa! It’s also a fantastic time to catch up with old friends that have been neglected during busy years, reviving those connections, and reliving old memories.
