Moonstone

Moonstone is a type of feldspar. Its distinctive optical effects of a blue to silver reflection make it one of the most distinctive gemstones. This delicate beauty has captivated viewers for years, it was believed to protect the wearer from danger and bring good fortune in love. Moonstone is one of the birthstones for June and gifted for thirteenth wedding anniversaries.

Moonstone is translucent, and is mostly colourless but can also occur as pink, orange, yellow, green, grey and brown colours. The beautiful adularescence of moonstone is caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite within the crystal structure. When light is reflected through these layers it is split into spectral colours and scatters, causing the beautiful glowing effect upon the surface of the stone. Moonstone occurs in Sri Lanka, India, Burma, Madagascar, Tanzania and the USA.
