Hessonite garnet is part of the grossular garnet group. Its colours range from brownish yellow to brownish red. As a result of its rich and warm colour, it is often referred to as the cinnamon stone. Hessonite garnet has a lesser density and hardness of other varieties of garnet, hence its name, derived from the Greek word for ‘inferior.’ However, just because it is a softer, lighter stone does not detract from its lustrous beauty and it looks fabulous set in jewellery. Hessonite garnet deposits have been found in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Canada, Pakistan and Tanzania.
