You’ve probably already noticed, but green dial watches have become somewhat of a trend for 2021. Hues of emerald, olive, forest and khaki currently overwhelm some of the world’s leading luxury watch collections whether it’s the mint green Oris Cotton Candy, the new IWC Pilots Chronograph 41 or the limited edition Breitling Avenger GMT. Another brand to join the movement is Longines who have expanded their iconic Spirit collection with a new green dial.
First launched during the summer of last year, the Longines Spirit watch was designed as a modern interpretation of the vintage instruments worn by aviation pioneers like Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes, Elinor Smith and Paul-Emilie Victor. Rather than become a limited edition series like so many of their other vintage-inspired watches in their Heritage family, the Longines Spirit better suited a permanent core collection hosting a nice balance of historic references with modern mechanics. The collection is already home to a stunning range of designs, available in 40mm and 42mm diameters, with classic three-hand date or full chronograph complications and a choice of blue, black and silver dials. Now, that list of colours expands with four new green-dialled references to choose from.
The Longines Spirit Green is currently offered in both 40mm and 42mm sizes with a choice of a stainless steel bracelet or brown calfskin leather strap. At the moment, there is only the three-hand and date function to contend with, but if we know Longines, we expected a chronograph version to land shortly. It’s not only the colour of the dial that is different, however, but also the finishing. The black edition of the Longines Spirit is matte, the blue sunray-brushed and the silver grained- argenté. The Longines Spirit Green watches deliver a handsome sandblasted finish with a subtle metallic sheen. The deep shade of green is perfectly combined with other vintage elements including beige coloured Superluminova and the option of the distressed brown leather strap.
Other than the dial transformation, the Longines Spirit Green watch remains very much identical to other references in the collection. Applied numerals and a raised minute track adorn the circumference of the dial as does a a date window at 3 o’clock, the applied Longines logo and stars and red-tipped detailing on the seconds hand. Powering each of the functions is the L888.4 automatic winding movement, otherwise known as the ETA A31.L11. Chronometer certified, the movement delivers an impeccable standard of accuracy alongside 21 jewels, a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour, a silicon balance spring and a power reserve of 72 hours.
The case of the Longines Spirit Green watches are available in two sizes, 40mm or 42mm, both engineered from brushed and polished stainless steel. On top, domed sapphire crystal glass provides incredible scratch resistance as well as easy legibility thanks to a layer of anti-reflective coating while on the back, a screw down stainless steel case back is secured by six screws and adorned with an engraving of the Longines logo. The case back and the screw in crown promise a water resistant rating of 100 metres.
