Inspired by the pastel shades of spring and the world’s requisite for some hopefulness and optimism, Swiss watch manufacturer Oris have launched their iconic Divers Sixty Five collection dressed in a new series of pastel dial colours. From sky blue to wild green and lipstick pink, the new releases are intentionally unisex and engineered entirely from bronze, a combination usually afforded to their Hölstein Edition watches or their Carl Brashear Limited Editions.
It’s news to nobody that the last twelve months have been difficult. Whether you’ve been staying at home, self-isolating and social distancing from loved ones or you’re one of the incredible keyworkers still out there now fighting to bring us back some “normality,” we salute you all for staying hopeful and positive. With similar thoughts in mind, and with the seasons of spring just beginning, Oris wanted to launch a bright, bold and fresh new series of watches designed to bring its followers a smile. The new Oris Divers Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’ watch collection does just that with three bronze designs adorned with a sky blue, wild green or lipstick pink dial.
Contrasting rather uniquely to each pastel-coloured dial is a 38mm full bronze case. Bronze is certainly not a foreign material for the luxury watch brand, with them incorporating it into many other Divers Sixty Five references and Big Crown designs. The material however is rarely used throughout every component, including the case, bezel, crown and bracelet. The Oris Divers Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’ watch collection integrates solid bronze throughout almost every element of its construction including its case, lugs, unidirectional relief bezel, screw in security crown and solid three-link bracelet. The only sight of stainless steel you will see is on the screw down case back and on the folding element of the buckle.
The use of bronze in the brand’s divers range also makes perfect sense, not only for its increase in popularity in the luxury watch industry over the last few years but for its associations within marine history. Bronze is used extensively in naval engineering with most ships fitted with pumps and valves contrived from bronze because of its excellent sea water corrosion resistance and strength. As a watch material, bronze offers its own unique characteristic, one that will develop its own patina over time. When exposed to moisture in the air and pH levels in perspiration, the bronze will darken and change colour meaning no two of the Oris Divers Sixty Five ‘Cotton Candy’ watches will ever look the same.
Following in the footsteps of the rest of the Divers Sixty Five collection, the trio of Candy Floss editions boast a water resistant rating of 100 metres and come equipped with domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on the inside, a 60 minute scale on the bezel and Superluminova coated hands and indexes. Powering the hour, minute and seconds hands and the date window at 3 o’clock is the well-known Oris 733 calibre which alongside its 26 jewels and frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour delivers a healthy power reserve of 38 hours.
Each of the three Oris Divers Sixty Five ‘Cotton Candy’ watches come complete with a choice of a full bronze bracelet with a classic folding buckle or a brown calfskin leather strap with a bronze pin buckle. For us, the full-bronze look is a must-have, especially because it’s so rarely seen in the Oris collections. The bracelet variants retail at £1,900 while the leather strap option delivers the lipstick pink, wild green and sky blue dials at a price of £1,750.
