Junghans Max Bill 60 Limited Edition Watch Set Review

Jewellery & Watch News

On the 14th of April, Junghans celebrated their 160th anniversary since their foundation in 1861 with a host of new releases. Alongside a Meister Signatur Handaufzug Edition, a duo of Form A watches and a re-edition of the famous Max Bill Küchenuhr clock, the German watch manufacturer unveiled a new trio of limited edition Max Bill watches. Also celebrating 60 years of the Max Bill collection, the Junghans Max Bill 60 Limited Edition watch set is one for the collectors.

Every year for the past half a decade, Junghans have released a set of limited edition Max Bill watches as part of their annual releases. In 2017, we saw a duo of watches featuring a whimsical and colourful piece of Max Bill artwork on the case back and in 2018, they honoured the work of architect and painter Max Bill with a unique set including a watch and a table clock. 2019 marked the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus and in celebration, Junghans launched another set with a Max Bill chronograph wristwatch and a table clock. Then last year, we were treated to another duo consisting of a 34mm automatic time and date version known as the Kleine Automatic and a 40mm chronograph nicknamed the Chronoscope. As part of their 160th anniversary and in celebration of the Max Bill collection’s 60th birthday, the Schramberg-based manufacturer have upped their game with three watches as part of the yearly limited edition set which for the first time introduce two new complications to the Max Bill series.

First up in the set is a Junghans Max Bill Automatic watch under reference 27/4108.02. Arguably the simpler of the three, its design delivers a classic three-hand-date display powered by the J800.1 automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 38 hours. It measures to 38 millimetres in diameter, 10 millimetres in height and like its brothers, is engineered from anthracite polished PVD coated stainless steel. At the centre, the white matte dial celebrates 60 years of Max Bill via the numeral at 12 o’clock while the 4-times screwed case back is engraved with a special anniversary decoration and Max Bill’s signature. Domed sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating protects the dial while orange accents and green environmentally friendly luminous hands guarantee exceptional readability.

The second piece in the Junghans Max Bill 60 Limited Edition Watch Set is reference 27/3190.02 also known as the Junghans Max Bill MEGA Kleine Sekunde. At first glance, its display appears nothing overly extraordinary with environmentally friendly luminous hands at the centre for hours and minutes, a small seconds dial at 6 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock. Deceivingly however, the  MEGA Kleine Sekunde delivers exceptional precision unlike any other powered by the multi- frequency radio-controlled movement J101.66. Using Junghans’ unique autoscan feature, the timepiece automatically searches for signals transmitted across five frequencies to ensure the exact time is displayed in half-second moves. Due to its movement, the case measures in a little slimmer at 9 millimetres but sis till 38 millimetres in diameter and engineered from anthracite polished PVD stainless steel. Like the other two models in the Junghans Max Bill 60 Limited Edition Watch Set, it boasts a water resistance of 30 metres and is secured by a light grey leather strap with orange lining and a PVD coated pin buckle.

While the Junghans Max Bill MEGA Kleine Sekunde above is the first of its kind in the Max Bill series to incorporate smalls seconds function, the last model in the limited edition set is the first in the collection to reveal a regulator complication. Found under reference 27/3190.02, the Junghans Max Bill Regulator Edition employs the matte white backdrop for presenting decentralised hours at 12 o’clock, a small seconds counter at 6 o ‘clock and a central minutes display. Each of these functions are powered by the J800.5 calibre with a power reserve of 42 hours. This piece is the largest out of the three but only by half of a millimetre. Its diameter remains at 38 millimetres like the others but its height comes in a little taller at 10.5 millimetres. Again, orange accented hands glow in the dark and a four-times screw down case back delivers a handsome special edition engraving celebrating the anniversary.

The three watches are only available to purchase as part of the Junghans Max Bill 60 Watch Set which is limited to 1,060 units.
