The Garmin EPIX Pro smartwatch has landed, delivering the high-resolution AMOLED display within the same three cases as the Fenix series. Plus, there’s a new integrated flashlight feature across all models, a new optical heart rate sensor with running power feature and new training tools called Endurance Score and Hill Score. Here’s all you need to know about the new Garmin EPIX Pro…
What’s New?
For many, the biggest benefit to the Garmin EPIX Pro is the new selection of sizes available. Previously, the EPIX was only available with a 47mm case but now it can be found in 42mm and 51mm for smaller and larger wrists respectively. There is of course a new range of 47mm models too with all the same upgrades as its counterparts. New case sizing also means new colourways for the Garmin EPIX Pro including all-black and light gold 42mm models and all-black, bare titanium or carbon grey titanium 47mm and 51mm models.
In the same way the largest Garmin Fenix 7X has a longer battery life than its smaller equivalents, the Garmin EPIX Pro 51mm offers an improved charge. While the 47mm model offers 16 days of charge in smartwatch mode, 21 days in Battery Saver Mode and 42 hours in GPS Only, the Garmin EPIX Pro 51mm offers up to 31 days in smartwatch mode, 41 days in Battery Saver Mode and 82 hours in GPS Only. Following this pattern, the Garmin EPIX Pro 42mm watch has a slightly shorter battery life promising 10 days of charge in smartwatch mode, up to 14 days in Battery Saver Mode and 28 hours in GPS Only.
For the first time, the Garmin EPIX Pro smartwatches feature Garmin’s innovative flashlight feature. The multi-LED flashlight is cleverly integrated into the side of the case and offers a bright white light for illuminating the ground in front of your during late night adventures. There’s also several modes and customisation options including an SOS mode and a Strobe mode for running. In the same way, the Garmin EPIX Pro also comes with the Jet Lag Advisor for the first time to help you minimise the effects of jet lag as well as a Red Shift Mode which changes the colours of the display to shades of red. This is useful for those wanting to reduce sleep cycle disturbance or those needing enhanced legibility in dark settings.
Two brand new features for the Garmin EPIX Pro watches is Endurance Score and Hill Score. The former combines training data from your workouts to help you understand how training impacts your overall endurance. Higher scores reflect more capacity for longer performances. Hill Score, on the other hand, gives you an insight into your uphill running capabilities by monitoring your uphill running progress overtime based on your VO2 max and training history. There’s also an upgraded wrist-based heart rate monitor with a new running power feature which taps into metrics such as pace, vertical oscillation, grade and even local wind conditions to calculate the amount of power you’re applying to the ground as you run. Finally, Garmin have added some new preloaded activity profiles into the Garmin EPIX Pro, predominantly team sports like football, volleyball, cricket, badminton and rugby.
Additional Features
In addition to all of this, Garmin EPIX Pro watches deliver the long list of apps and features previously available on the standard EPIX Gen 2. This includes lightweight titanium cases with high-resolution AMOLED touchscreen displays, 100 metre water resistant ratings, 32GB of memory, and a choice of rubber, leather or nylon straps. As for health and fitness features, there’s Garmin Coach, Visual Race Predictor, PacePro technology, grade-adjusted pace, training status and readiness, performance metrics, real-time stamina, daily suggested workouts, recovery time and much more.
For when adventure calls, the Garmin EPIX Pro smartwatches utilise Up Head Map Integration for at-glance awareness of selection points of interest, ABC sensors, SATIQ technology, NextFork Map Guide and round-trip routing. There’s then all the essential features you need for day-to-day life including stress, sleep and hydration tracking, music storage, stocks tracker, smart notifications and Garmin Pay.
