Unveiling the Breitling South Sea Capsule Collection

Jewellery & Watch News

Three interpretations of the lady’s Breitling Chronomat 36 – the Breitling South Sea Capsule Collection is a vibrant, fun and fresh take on a 1940s icon, featuring gem-set bezels and dials in a choice of midnight blue, beige or mint green.

Today, Breitling releases a new iteration of the popular Chronomat watch. Its design still has purpose, an influential style and a strong, powerful aesthetic but will be in production for a limited time only. The new Breitling South Sea Capsule Collection is a retro-inspired take on the hugely collectable Chronomat watch but this time is inspired by marine life, lush greenery and twists of summer with cocktail-coloured gemstones and striking 18ct rose gold dial elements. The 36mm models are powered by a reliable self-winding automatic movement and come dressed on coloured alligator leather straps to complete their playful and daring personalities.

Breitling CEO, Georges Kern explains; “This colourful and exclusive new capsule collection – to be produced for a limited time only – is aimed at more fashion-forward women of action, purpose, and style”.

The influential Chronomat

The Breitling Chronomat refers to multiple designs from within the prestigious brand’s extensive catalogue. The first was a 1940’s chronograph with a date feature and slide rule bezel built into an automatic winding wristwatch, which was met with resounding success upon its release. It made for a very useful and practical tool for performing flight-based calculations. For many fans, however, the Chronomat name recalls the icon from the 1980s - a reimagined and designated pilot’s watch with added rider tabs. This redesigned Chronomat watch was produced as a collaborative effort between Breitling and the Italian Jet Team Frecce Tricolori. Just last year, Breitling released the Chronomat in a women’s version for the very first time. The Breitling Chronomat 36, as its name suggests, featured a 36mm case width and came dressed on the instantly recognisable Rouleaux link bracelet, designed specifically by the Swiss manufacturer for the Chronomat line.

The new Breitling South Sea Capsule Collection

Keeping the same 36mm diameter, the new Breitling South Sea Capsule Collection is the sister to the brand’s latest women’s Chronomat and presents a trio of scintillating women’s watches crafted from stainless steel that boast indulgent, colourful dial designs. These special lacquered dials in midnight blue, mint green and beige feature rose gold indexes and hands treated with Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping in the dark or during the night. The collection nods to Breitling’s commitment to creating stylish women’s watches that never compromise on quality, accuracy or performance. Where many luxury watch brands simply develop a smaller version of a men’s watch to cater to their female audiences - Breitling takes a different approach. Instead, it acknowledges the importance of creating a timepiece dedicated to a woman’s style and personality – a unique and distinct design of its own. The new watches from the Breitling South Sea Capsule Collection certainly express a sense of individuality. Without a doubt, the watches from the Chronomat For Women Collection shine a light on the importance of female confidence and versatility.

The Breitling Chronomat Automatic 36 South Sea watches with midnight blue, mint green and beige-coloured dials all feature a gem-set bezel. The stones graduate in shades of orange through to yellow, through to light pink, through to purple. Inspired by the colours of popular cocktails, these vibrant stones create a spectrum of colour around their respective displays – each one offering a useful date window at 6 o’clock. Each luminous-coated baton hour marker is accompanied by a round brilliant-cut diamond and the central gold second hand bears the recognisable counterweight crafted into the iconic Breitling “B” motif. The “Chronometer Chronomat” lettering towards the bottom of the dial is cleverly balanced by the Breitling lettering at 12 o’clock, granting a well-proportioned dial to reference the time from.

Each of the Breitling Chronomat Automatic 36 South Sea watches feature a cambered sapphire crystal glass front treated with anti-reflective properties on both sides. The back of the screwed case (with a non-screw-locked crown and two gaskets) conceals the automatic movement within and features engraved lettering depicting the Breitling name and water-resistant capability of up to 100 meters. Inside this robust stainless steel housing is the Breitling Calibre 10. The self-winding mechanical movement with ball-bearing and bidirectional mechanism is COSC-certified and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour, delivering a power reserve of 42 hours.

The new Breitling Automatic 36 South Sea watches from the new South Sea Capsule Collection come dressed on beige, green and blue alligator leather straps to match their beige, mint green and midnight blue dial colours respectively. The straps are completed with stainless steel folding clasps engraved with the famous “B” logo.
