How did the Shaun Leane Hook jewellery collection become an icon of British jewellery design? Why are its sweeping curves and harsh points coveted by celebrities, royalty and mere mortals alike? As the British jewellery maker’s best-selling collection, it seems only right to dedicate an entire feature to Shaun Leane Hook jewellery and hopefully shed some light on its unprecedented success…
Of course, the Shaun Leane Hook jewellery collection wouldn’t be where it is today without its creator, British jewellery designer Shaun Leane. At just 15 years old, Shaun Leane took to the bench in London’s jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden, and trained as an apprentice in diamond mounting and antique restoration. Here, he quickly understood the importance of a technical education in an atelier, honing his attention to detail and careful craftsmanship. In 1992, just a year after completing his apprenticeship, he was introduced to the late Alexander McQueen, who himself was only just starting out in the world of fashion. The relationship between the two blossomed and led to some of the most iconic visions on the catwalk with Shaun Leane creating provocative jewels for the models that today remain highly covetable works of art.
The high-profile collaboration between Alexander McQueen and Shaun Leane acted as a catalyst for Leane to create his own collection of Shaun Leane jewellery available to the public in 1999. Taking inspiration from catwalk creations like the Quill choker and thorned pearl shoulder piece came the inaugural Shaun Leane Hook jewellery collection. Like the seductive and primal pieces worn by the models, the series brought to life familiar shapes and silhouettes seen in nature, evoking visceral origins with long, slender barbs and sharp points in steel and gold.
It just a few years, the Shaun Leane Hook jewellery collection became the British manufacturer’s best-selling design appearing on the necks, wrists, fingers and lobes of celebrities all around the world and appearing in movies and on TV. To put into perspective just how widely renowned the Shaun Leane Hook jewellery collection is, icons such as Meghan Markle, Cara Delevingne, Kate Winslet, Kendall Jenner and Emma Watson are known to regularly wear their own pieces from the series. When Meghan Markle in particular was spotted wearing her own pair of Shaun Leane Hook earrings, the design sold out in a matter of minutes.
Shaun Leane Hook earrings are easily the chief of the collection, reinventing the traditional hoop with a half-complete circle that elegantly claws its way around your lobe. There’s something distinctively sensual and sophisticated about the earrings that make the wearer feel just as fierce and confident as the creatures that inspire them. Since they’ve become a flagship for the brand, you can expect to find several variations of Shaun Leane Hook earrings to choose from. There are four different sizes handcrafted from a choice of yellow gold, rose gold, white gold or black rhodium. Some of the designs can also be found dressed in white diamonds or black spinel for an additional touch of glamour.
The Shaun Leane Hook Heart necklace is another famous piece, adding a softer feel to the otherwise provocative claw silhouette. Two hook motifs come together to form a beautiful heart pendant which for many has been gifted as an emblem of enduring love. Again, the design comes in several sizes and in a variety of metals with some pieces fused together with a diamond pave kiss. To match, there’s also a gorgeous range of Shaun Leane Hook Heart bracelets which repeats the intertwined heart symbol but on a fine chain for wearing around the wrist.
