British and Bristol-based watch manufacturer Fears adds a new larger model to its coveted Brunswich family with a series of three colourful 40mm watches. Dressed in dials of Opaline Silver, Fears Blue and Flamingo Pink, the new Fears Brunswick 40 watches make history with the first Fears custom-made bracelet which has been developed exclusively for the design.
For us, a 40mm case has always felt like the sweet spot for a dress watch. While 38mm seems just that little too modest and 42mm can be harder to disguise under the cuff of a shirt, 40mm watches sit perfectly in the middle allowing for effortless wear and noticeable beauty. The new Fears Brunswich 40 watch offers exactly this with a greater presence on the wrist compared to its small counterparts. The addition of the bracelet against the iconic cushions-shaped case also gives the design a significantly sportier and more elegant persona, one that we know will be an instant hit for lovers of vintage sports watches.
Remarking on the launch of the new Fears Brunswick 40, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, Managing Director of Fears Watch Company, says, “After the success of the original Brunswick with its 38 mm case design I’m delighted that we’re now able to introduce a larger, automatic version of our elegant, cushion-cased watch. Not only a new, sportier design but one that features the first Fears bracelet since the 1970s. I see the Brunswick 40 as the sportier, older brother to the classic 38mm Brunswick.”
The 40mm stainless steel cases of the Fears Brunswick 40 watches are expertly finished with a combination of circular brushing and polishing, giving off the same sophisticated aura as the 38mm original with no flat surfaces. Pairing with its new diameter is a height of 11.06mm, inclusive of the domed sapphire crystal glass which protects the three dial colours beneath it. The sapphire crystal is treated with ARdur® Swiss anti-reflective coating on both the inside and outside for easy legibility in all lighting. The case back is left closed to help assist in a water resistant rating of 100 metres.
A noteworthy addition to the Fears Brunswich 40 watches, alongside its increased case size, is the bespoke five-link stainless steel bracelet. Developed exclusively for this specific design, the bracelet comes with flush-fitting end links which give the watch an integrated aesthetic. The links are gently curved so they sit flush to the wrist permitting easy movement and comfort. The links themselves alternate between brushed and polished to match with the case and secure by a trigger-release butterfly clasp. The clasp when opened reveals a secret ‘Bristol Flower’ symbol.
There are three Fears Brunswich 40 watches to choose from: Opaline Silver, Fears Blue and Flamingo Pink. The latter is the more surprising out of the trio but a colour we really love for a men’s dress watch. Each dial features several layers with multiple finishes to accomplish the rich colour and light-reflecting surface alongside Fears bespoke ‘Edwin’ numerals and solid pipette shaped hands. The hands are diamond cut with a bevel running down the middle giving off an unmissable shine and thus allowing for instant legibility. The Fears logo sits in its usual position below 12 o’clock.
Powering the hours, minutes and seconds function of each Fears Brunswich 40 watch is the ETA 2824-2 automatic winding movement. It enjoys 25 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 40 hours. Although you can’t see the movement from the case back, Fears ensures it is decorated to a high standard with Côtes de Genève striping, blued screws and a custom rotor featuring the ‘Bristol Flower’.
