Meet the Tissot PRX Automatic Powermatic 80

Jewellery & Watch News

Earlier this year, Swiss watchmaker Tissot launched the 1970’s-inspired PRX collection with integrated cases and bracelets, super slim profiles and scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Now, the same modern-vintage aesthetic referencing the disco era is revived yet again, but this time while welcoming the brand’s legendary Powermatic 80 automatic movement. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Tissot PRX Automatic Powermatic 80 watches.

Ask anyone, two of the biggest trends in the watch industry right now are vintage re-interpretations and luxury sports watches. The Tissot PRX Automatic Powermatic 80 combines both with a distinctive aesthetic recalling a retro Tissot Seastar watch from 1978 and all the general features of a sports watch with integrated steel components and a handsome textured dial. The case is a particularly promising element for lovers of sports watches with a sweet-spot 40mm diameter and a elegant thickness of 10.9mm. The barrel-shaped case is also coupled with a perfectly circular bezel with a shiny mirror polish to contrast against the brushed finishing of the case itself.

There are currently three Tissot PRX Automatic Powermatic 80 watches to choose from, all engineered from classic stainless steel with two opting for a matching steel fixed bezel and the third distinguished by its rose gold plated inflections. The rose gold-accented model under reference T1374072103100 exudes a crisp white-silver dial while the two fully steel models are available with black or blue centrepieces. The black model can be found under reference T1374071105100 and the blue dial under T1374071104100.

Other than the Powermatic 80 movement inside, the new Tissot PRX Automatic watches also differ from their earlier counterparts for the design of their dials. The white, blue and black faces are all finished in ‘Clous De Paris’ which is essentially a guilloche pattern formed of tiny pyramidal shapes. The effect is truly stunning and gives the appearance of a watch at a much higher price point. The dials are also home to a framed aperture at 3 o’clock, sleek hour markers and strong hands, the latter two being treated to glow in the dark Superluminova.

Fuelling the hours, minutes, seconds and date complication of the Tissot PRX Automatic Powermatic 80 watches is of course the brand’s Powermatic 80 calibre. It’s a widely used movement in Tissot’s collections featuring a patented Nivachron balance spring and an extraordinary power reserve of 80 hours. We’re also promised a frequency of 21,600vph and 23 jewels, some of which can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back alongside the winding rotor nicely adorned with a wave motif.

The finishing touch of the Tissot PRX Automatic Powermatic 80 is the integrated bracelet. Its architecture is tapered so it sits wonderfully on the wrist while the alternative finishing of the links, which change from brushed on the outside and mirror polished on the inside, offers an elegant finish worthy of any luxury sports watch.
