Meet the Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition Watch

Jewellery & Watch News

Launched in collaboration with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio Co. (SAFS), Oris have launched their latest limited edition in celebration of one of China’s most legendary icons, Sun Wokong, in particular the adaptation seen in the classic Chinese animated film The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven.

The Story of Sun Wukong

There is perhaps no figure in Chinese mythology as identifiable around the world as Sun Wukong. The character first appeared in the 16th century novel by Wu Cheng'en named Journey to the West, a story named one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. In the story, Sun Wukong, also known as “The Monkey King” was born from a stone and achieved supernatural powers such as immortality, super human durability and morphing powers. Over the decades and centuries, Sun Wukong has been reimagined within countless adaptations including a number of stage plays, television series, animations, videos games and films.

One of the most famous adaptations is the 1961 animated film The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven, which captures Sun Wukong in full colour as he rebels against the Jade Emperor of heaven. Just like the original Su Wukong in Journey to the West, the film features The Monkey King fighting with his red and yellow magic spinning staff, an image which is placed at the very centre of the Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition.

The Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition

The Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch has been developed in partnership with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio Co., the producers of the animated film. At its centre, the watch has carefully chosen a royal blue dial equipped with an unusual seconds hand dyed in red with golden tips. This colouring beautifully embodies that of the magical staff Sun Wukong uses during battle. The staff is renowned for its speed which is again wonderfully addressed through the flashes of pastel blue on the dial which makes it look as though the seconds hand is speeding around the circumference. Another nod to Sun Wukong can also be found on the screw down case back where an image of the figure is engraved beside the watch’s limited edition status of 2,000 pieces.

As for the rest of the Oris Sun Wukong watch, you can expect to find all the classic tropes of the popular Oris Aquis with a 41.5mm stainless steel case with familiar down-turned lugs, a 300 metre water resistant rating, a screw down crown with crown protectors, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating and a three-row link bracelet. Topping the case is a gorgeous navy blue ceramic insert bezel which pairs nicely with the dial and offers diving usability with unidirectional rotating functionality and a 60 minute scale.

At home on the dial is the familiar applied indexes with Superluminova, sword-shaped hands for hours and minutes and a date window at 6 o’clock all powered by the Oris 733 automatic winding movement. The calibre is based on the Sellita SW200-1 base and pleases with a 28,800vph frequency and 38 hour power reserve.
