Inspired by the glacial lakes of the Mont-Blanc Massif, the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea watch collection expands for 2023 adding a new grey dial into the mix.
It’s been a huge year for Montblanc already, with their famous 1858 collection expanding more than ever. For Watches & Wonders 2023, the Swiss watchmaker has launched a gorgeous range of new releases including an entire collection of 1858 0 Oxygen The 8000 watches. These four special edition models are designed as a tribute to the world’s fourteen highest peaks—each over 8,000 meters above sea level and feature the brand’s unique zero oxygen technology. Alongside these, Montblanc has also debuted a new 1858 Iced Sea watch which similarly celebrates outdoor adventurers with a unique grey display evoking the unusual formations created within glacial ice.
The new Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch adds a new, elegant shade of grey to its ice-inspired dial, taking inspiration from one of the Mont-Blanc mountain’s largest glaciers – the Mer de Glace. Like before, the dial is created using a special technique called gratté-boisé which before the 1858 Iced Sea watch had never been used before on a watch dial. The complication process creates a genuine impression of ice on the 0.5mm tall dial with both depth and luminosity. The dial maintains the familiar bold Arabic numerals and surrounding applies indices filled with Superluminova and cathedral-shaped hands for the hours and minutes as equally luminous.
The original line of Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea watches made history as Montblanc’s first ever sports diving watch, meeting the ISO 6425 standard with a screw down crown, screw down case back and a water resistant rating of 300 metres. The new Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch is no different and is tested under the Montblanc Laboratory 500 Hour Test to guarantee shock, magnetic and temperature resistance.
The case of the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch offers everything you’d need for under water exploration including a robust stainless steel architecture measuring to 41mm in diameter and a unidirectional rotating bezel adorned with a two-toned ceramic insert. The ceramic is predominantly black with the 0 to 15 section of the 60 minute scale finished in a light grey. The scale itself is printed in white and pairs with a luminous dot at 12 o’clock. There’s also sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on the front side and a solid case back handsomely engraved with the image of a diver exploring glacial waters. The decoration is created using advanced laser engraving, a technique Montblanc has famously used in many of their luxury watch collections.
Completing the exterior of the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch is a choice of two straps. The first is a beautifully tapered stainless steel bracelet with a double deployment buckle while the second is a water resistant black rubber strap. Finally, powering the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Grey watch from the inside is the Calibre MB 24.17 automatic winding movement. Alongside classic hours, minutes, seconds and date function, the Swiss made movement offers 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph (4Hz) and a 38-hour power reserve.
