How To Clean Jewellery To Help Protect Against Coronavirus

Jewellery & Watch News

“Wash your hands”: three words we all have engraved into our minds at the moment – and rightfully so! But what about our jewellery? Like our hands, the jewellery we wear is exposed to all sorts of germs and bacteria as we go about our daily routine. And while disinfectant and bleach is all well and good for our kitchen worktops, toilet flushers, door handles and steering wheels, what products should we be using to clean our jewellery during the coronavirus pandemic?

Rings are most at risk for carrying dangerous particles since they sit centre stage on our fingers. We use our hands and fingers for most day to day things, so it is much easier for germs to sit on top if we do not wash them regularly. Having said that, necklaces, bracelets and earrings can also easily become hubs for dirt and grime, so it is still highly advised that you clean them regularly too.

To get the best advice on how to clean jewellery, we asked our Workshop Manager, Paul Barker, for his best tips. “The safest way to clean your jewellery at home is with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Let your jewellery soak for a while to allow any stubborn debris to loosen up, and then take the toothbrush and gently scrub the piece down.” He also advises “avoid strong alcohol sanitizers and any form of bleach as these will dry out any gemstones and may lead the surface to damage or crack.”

After you have cleaned your jewellery with warm water and soap, we highly recommend that you use a polishing cloth and some sparkle dip to bring that unmissable shine back to the piece. At C W Sellors, we offer a fantastic selection of jewellery cleaning kits for you to order direct to your door including silver polishing cloths, gold polishing cloths, silver sparkle dip, jewel sparkle dip and diamond dazzle sticks.

Sometimes the simplest advice is the best advice, but it is also incredibly important during these uncertain times to make sure that like your hands, your jewellery is also cleaned regularly. This doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing your favourite pieces either; our jewellery is just the sparkly, unwavering companions that we all need right know to cheer us up!
