Across their 140 year long history, Cuervo y Sobrinos has welcomed some of the world’s most influential men into their Havana boutique. Alongside Clark Gable, Enrico Caruso and Winston Churchill, a legendary name to have sought their own Cuervo y Sobrinos watch was acclaimed writer and Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway. In honour of this association, the Cuba-based watch manufacturer partners with Hemingway Limited to launch a range of Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches.
Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba at ‘Finca Vigia’ for 20 years between 1939 and 1960 and during this time was known to have published some of his greatest works including The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Whilst resident in Cuba, the literary genius also visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique on a quest for his own luxury watch. In celebration of their history together, the Latin watch brand launches a selection of four limited edition watches, two of which are sold separately and the second sold together as an exclusive limited edition set. The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches are also officially licenced by Hemingway Limited, an organisation that manages the Ernest Hemingway© trademark, founded by Ernest’s eldest son, Jack, in 1988.
All four Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches are crafted from stainless steel and measure in at 40mm in diameter and 11.75mm in height. Their polished surfaces are paired with the statement Historiador lugs, fixed and unadorned bezels and screw in crowns water resistant to 100 metres. We’re also promised sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating on the front and on the back, the solid screw down case back reveals an engraving of the word ‘Hemingway’ and a large ‘H’ with a marlin as the centre line. The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches fastened by a light or dark brown leather strap and a stainless steel CyS branded folding clasps.
Separating the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway Limited Edition watches is their dials. The two designs that can be brought individually come with a cream or dark brown dial and are limited to 140 pieces each. Meanwhile, the limited edition set features a silver dial and a black dial, both restricted to only 30 pieces. The set supports its rarer status with a stunning 18ct gold plaque on the side of its case to showcase its limited edition condition while the former pair opts for one of the same but in classic stainless steel. All four dials follow suit offering colour-coordinated hour and minute hands set with Superluminova and large Arabic numerals. In celebration of the literary figure, the dial’s also feature a famous quote from Hemingway on the flange which reads “In order to write about life, first you must live it”. His name is also printed in red at 6 o’clock.
Powering the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway Limited Edition watches is the CyS 5121 automatic winding calibre. Based on the Sellita SW 200 calibre, it offers classic hours, minutes and seconds hands, a frequency of 28,800vph and a 38 hour power reserve. We’re also assured of an engraved oscillating rotor, but the closed case back keeps that from view.
