Jewellery & Watch News

Some watches are famous for their technological innovations, others for their daring aesthetics and others for their cameos in popular culture. The Hamilton Ventura, on the other hand, ticks all of these boxes with its novel electric movement, ties to the King of Rock and Roll and its unmissable boomerang case shape. Today, the iconic design combines its winning formula with a modern colourway and skeletonised dial. Meet the Hamilton Ventura Elvis80 Skeleton…
The Hamilton Ventura is one of those designs that everyone has heard about. Its unique construction was first introduced by Hamilton in January of 1957 and was considered the world’s first electronic watch. Several years later, a white gold Ventura was worn on the wrist of Elvis Presley during the shoot of the 1961 film Blue Hawaii cementing the design in watch history. It’s prevalence in our cultural landscape continues today, having appeared in all four Men in Black instalments and remaining the official timepiece of Men in Black agents. In 2015, Hamilton launched the first Ventura Elvis80 collection in honour of what would have been Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday and it is this very design that takes precedence today with a new skeletonised dial.
There are two Hamilton Ventura Elvis80 Skeleton watches to choose from, the first dressed in black PVD and the second in rose gold PVD. Both maintain the famous Ventura triangle shape measuring to 42.5mm by 44.6mm with a mix of polished and brushed surfaces, a sapphire crystal case back, 50 metre water resistance and a signed crown in matching PVD situated on its own segmented plate. Each colourway also showcases its own coloured electric pulse going horizontally across the open work dial. The rose gold PVD model remains synchronised with a rose gold accent while the black PVD model stands out with a bold red pulse. This addition is a nice hint to the roots of the original Ventura while delivering a touch of modern sophistication.
Of course, the skeletonised dial of each Hamilton Ventura Elvis80 Skeleton watch is the real focal point. We have seen an open work dial on a Ventura before, such as that of the Ventura Skeleton Limited Edition featured in the Spider-Man: Homecoming film, but its complex construction is different to anything done before. The central pulse line dressed in rose gold or red shares its space with matching zig-zag elements going from top to bottom across the dial which connect to each of the Superluminova indexes around the edge. The black PVD model features grey and white indexes while the rose gold PVD variant comes with gold and white.
Describing the dial sounds like it may be overly busy, but in fact on close inspection readability is no harder than on any standard timepiece. Superluminova fills the indexes and central hands for hours and minutes while the seconds hand is dressed in a choice of red or rose gold. Powering the Hamilton Ventura Elvis80 Skeleton is Hamilton’s H-10-S automatic winding movement. Based on the ETA C07.111, the 25 jewelled calibre delivers an impressive power reserve of 80 hours and a frequency of 21,600bph. As mentioned, you can see the movement through the exhibition case back alongside the partially open-worked rotor.
