A hero of the deep, the Hamilton Navy Frogman watch has remained the Swiss watch manufacturer’s most capable sea-ready watch ever since its launch during the 1940’s offering all the features needed for precision, legibility and endurance. For the latest instalment, Hamilton proposes a significantly more utilitarian and stealthier look which will ultimately replace all pre-existing models.
The Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman was originally created for the Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDUs) during WWII, and with its statement screw cap crown and durable case, made history as Hamilton’s first ever waterproof wristwatch. Until this point, the watch was only available to the NCDU; that was until the launch of the 1951 movie The Frogmen which recounted the dramatic stories of the US underwater demolition teams. Then in 2016, the luxury watch brand revived the design as a series of 46mm divers watches suited to watch collectors and professional divers alike. The collection now introduces four new designs with a remodelled crown guard and covert black finishes.
Past Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watches have often been compared to the lid of a canteen with its prominent crown, crown guard and in-built locking system. It’s a feature the Navy certainly would be interest in and a clear example of form following function. For the new 2022 Hamilton Navy Frogman Automatic watches, a statement canteen-style crown guard is elected but with a more forceful-looking bridge-shaped structure which is built and secured over both sides of the crown. This feature certainly makes the release feel at home underwater, offering a water resistant rating of 300 metres.
The case of the new Hamilton Navy Frogman Automatic watches comes in two styles, the first in classic stainless steel and the second with a stealthy black PVD coating. Both variations opt for brushed surfaces, 46mm diameters and a height of 13.58mm. We’re also warranted a dive-worthy unidirectional rotating bezel on top detailed with fine ratcheting for easy manipulation. The steel model comes with a handsome matte silver insert or black insert while the black PVD case elects only a black insert, both adorned with a 60 minute scales in relief. The cases also feature screw down case backs in their respective case material engraved with the image of a scuba diver’s mask.
No dive watch is complete without a highly legible display and of course, the Hamilton Navy Frogman watches for 2022 offer exactly that. The dials are just as covert-looking as their cases finished with a matte black grainy texture and adorned with military-esque indexes and a large Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock. During the day, the minute and seconds hand stands out with orange accents and at night, all three hands and the indexes glow in the dark thanks to Superluminova.
Paying homage to the sea, the 2022 Hamilton Navy Frogman watches come equipped with a choice of wavy rubber straps or classic steel bracelets. Two of the designs come on black rubber straps while a third comes on a khaki green rubber band. The fourth Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watch chooses a traditional three-row link stainless steel bracelet. Powering each design is the H-10 automatic winding movement with, 25 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and an impressive 80 hour power reserve.
