History of Turquoise

This vibrant blue gemstone is one of the oldest known gem materials and has always been adored for the striking and recognisable hues the stone possesses. Some evidence suggests turquoise possibly is one of the first stones ever mined, whilst the earliest gemstone jewellery known is from the ancient Egyptians, who used it as an inlay detailing and scarab carving. Historically, the stone's colour naturally changed over time, in the present-day the stone maintains the unique and bold hue presented, thanks to preservative modern processes.
As the national gem of Tibet, Turquoise is believed to guarantee good fortune, protection from evil and good health. An ancient practice was to embellish a horse’s bridle with Turquoise to protect the horse and the rider from a fall, which is known as a horse amulet. In conclusion, Turquoise has been a universal symbol of hope, for many years and in many cultures.

Mined primarily in North America for hundreds of years, the richest deposits of Turquoise can be found in Arizona and Nevada, with the most famous mine being the Kingsman Mine. Commercial mining at the Kingsman Mine began in 1880 and continues today with the reputation of producing the highest quality gemstones, perfect to fit into a jewellery setting.

Properties of Turquoise

Turquoise comprises tiny individual micro-crystals to form a porous mineral aggregate, a cryptocrystalline rock that obtains a 5-6 on the Mohs scale. Turquoise is a hydrous compound of copper and aluminium and therefore can be damaged by chemicals, making water and a soft cloth the best way to clean your turquoise. When set into sterling silver, the stone naturally stops the silver from tarnishing, and when the stone Is worn regularly, the oils from your skin will naturally polish the stone.
