The charming coastal town of Whitby draws visitors with a penchant for the gothic year-round. However, during the Goth Weekend, the streets are transformed into a sea of people donning black and purple attire, complete with extravagant headgear and silver jewellery.
Twice a year, the Whitby Goth Weekend attracts gothic enthusiasts from the UK and beyond. Attendees gather to showcase their alternative fashion and accessories, discuss music, art, and fashion, whilst indulging in live performances and delicious cuisine. Founded in 1994 by Jo Hampshire, a goth herself, the festival has featured renowned bands such as Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Clan of Xymox, Children on Stun, Manuskript, Alien Sex Fiend, Theatre of Hate, and Aurelio Voltaire over the years.
The festival's home is the birthplace of Whitby Jet, a stone made famous by Queen Victoria, who donned it as mourning jewellery after Prince Albert's death. Gothic jewellery enthusiasts continue to celebrate the stone, with Victorian and macabre imagery being some of the most popular themes. Whitby's dramatic cliffs and eerie abbey ruins have served as backdrops for countless goth photoshoots, including in 2011, when the site hosted a world record for the largest gathering of Draculas, with 1,369 attendees in costume.
Over the past twenty-five years, the festival has expanded its scope to include other subcultures, including cyberpunk, steampunk, and Victorian vampire enthusiasts. Buzzing with like-minded attendees, the go-to beverage at the festival is the local Black Death Stout which is brewed on location. For those who don’t mind the cold, the famous black ice cream from a century-old ice cream maker at Trill’s of Whitby is not one to be missed.
