Arnold & Son Introduces Globetrotter Watch in Steel for 2021

Jewellery & Watch News

For this year’s Geneva Watch Days event, Arnold & Son reserved two novelties for the occasion. The first, a high-end jewellery version of its three-dimensional moon model the Luna Magna and the second, two Arnold & Son Globetrotter watches. Dressed in stainless steel and paired with a blue or white opaline dial, the Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches follow in the footsteps of their rose gold predecessor launched earlier this year but with a stunning stainless steel profile tempting the wrists of those with a slightly stricter budget.

First launched in 2018, the Arnold & Son Globetrotter became one of the year’s best worldtime watches characterised by the stunning three-dimensional satellite view of the Northern Hemisphere at the centre of the dial. The first edition of the watch was released in stainless steel with a sober white dial and black Roman numerals. Shortly later, another stainless steel reference appeared, this one nicknamed the Globetrotter “Night” for its darker take on the centre globe as seen from space at night. Then earlier this year, the Swiss watch manufacturer announced they would be releasing the legendary design in 18 carat rose gold alongside some small but significant updates. The new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches for 2021 similarly share these improvements.

The 2018 Steel Globetrotter vs the 2021 Steel Globetrotter

As we said, the updates made to the new 2021 Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches are only subtle, but they make all the difference to an already stunning design. One of the most significant changes was the use of Superluminova along the shorelines both highlights the different continents on show when you turn the lights out while also giving a clever nod to the phenomenon of shoreline bioluminescence. The second update is the addition of mother of pearl power used on the hand-painted blue lacquer oceans which imparts additional depth and shine. Lastly, the new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches compared to the 2018 model also features a re-designed bridge to secure the upper pivot of the rotating hemisphere. Other than that, and the new white opaline and blue dial options, the DNA of the Globetrotter remains exactly the same.

The new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel Watches

Since the dial of the Arnold & Son Globetrotter is the quintessential element of the design, it would be wrong not to go into a little more detail. Both new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches feature a blue globe at the centre depicting the northern hemisphere secured by a statement arch carved in stainless steel. The blue dialled version address the hours in white while the opaline white model displays the classic Roman numerals in blue, equally displaying a decent level of contrast and sophistication. Both designs also indicate the local time with two short arrow-shaped hands. How do you read the worldtime function? That’s simple, the entire globe rotates once every 24 hours, allowing the time anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere to be read against the 24 hour scale.

The movement responsible for the rotating globe is the Maison’s in-house A&SS6022 automatic winding calibre. Like all of the brand’s manufacture movements, it has been completely developed, adjusted, fitted and decorated in their Switzerland-based factory. Speaking of decorations, the movement is a marvel to look at through the exhibition case back of each Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watch. There are Cotes de Geneve bridges, satin-finished wheels, bevelled polished screws and a stippled main plate. Many of the finishes are also NAC treated which uses platinum to deliver a gorgeous dark, anthracite-like finish. The A&SS6022 also impresses with a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 45 hours.

Both Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches measure to 45 millimetre in diameter and as their name suggests, are embodied fully in stainless steel. The cases are also water resistant to a simple 30 metres and equipped with a large knurled crown at 3 o’clock. To secure the designs to the wrist, a alligator leather strap is fitted with a matching stainless steel folding buckle. For the blue dialled variant, a dark cobalt shade of blue is used to dye the leather while the white opaline dial comes on a strap dressed in a slightly lighter sky blue.
