One of our personal favourite releases from the Geneva Watch Days 2021 event was a piece from German watch manufacturer Sinn. In celebration of their 60th anniversary, they have re-designed one of their most popular pilot watches in a special limited edition run. Meet the new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph watch…
The Sinn 103 was one of the brand’s first ever watches and still to this day remains one of their best-sellers. It was first developed during the mid-1960’s designed especially for pilots with manual winding movements and acrylic glass. Today, the collection features many modern improvements alongside a much more contemporary overall aesthetic. That changes with the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition however, which delivers a revived retro personality alongside the same tri-compax layout of the sub dials as the original Sinn 103 chronographs from the 60’s.
For it’s vintage finish, the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph opts for a stunning reverse panda dial which plays with chamois, otherwise known as off-white, coloured hues against a smooth black electroplated sunray finished dial. The bezel is also in black and for the first time in Sinn 103 history is crafted entirely from ceramic. Where the rest of the 103 series relies on a 60 minute scale, the new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition opts for a 12 hour scale for displaying a second time zone. The same chamois colour is also used on the lume for the syringe shaped hands and rectangular indexes.
To mark its release for the brand’s 60th anniversary, the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph features a unique case back engraved with its limited edition status of 600 pieces and the lettering ‘1961-2021’ and ‘60 Jahre’. The stainless steel where these engravings sit surround a sapphire crystal exhibition window which offers a view of the automatic winding movement within. The movement on show is that of the SW 510 automatic winding movement with 27 bearing jewels, 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour and a power reserve of 58 hours. The self-winding mechanism also guarantees to be anti-magnetic as per DIN 8309 standards.
The Sellita chronograph movement is also responsible for powering the abundance of chronograph complications on the reverse panda dial. These include three central hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds, a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock and two chronograph counters for the 12 hours and 30 minutes. A subtle black-boxed date window is also included between the markers at 4 and 5 o’clock. Protecting the dial of the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph Limited Edition is another layer of scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass this time preserved with a coating of anti-reflective treatment for optimal legibility.
For the case, the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Chronograph retains all the classic elements of the modern-day 103 watch with a polished stainless steel 41mm architecture, screwable push pieces and crown and a water resistance of 200 metres. The design also features one of the brand’s most coveted technologies, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, which allows for enhanced functional reliability and freedom from fogging. To secure the limited edition to the wrist, you will receive a choice of two straps on delivery including a handsome green leather strap and a classic black leather strap. Both are secured by classic stainless steel pin buckles.
