The art of proposing is different for everyone, which is ultimately what makes everyone’s love story so unique and special. But if you’ve recently decided you’re ready to spend the rest of your life with your partner and you’re going to ask them the biggest question of all, it doesn’t hurt to seek out a few key pieces of advice. We asked our talented team of women here at C W Sellors for what they want (or wanted) their partner to know before proposing. Now, compiled into one list, here are their top 5 tips for planning your proposal…
Ask Parents for Permission
Yes, it may seem old-fashioned but there’s nothing more romantic than hearing about how your fiancé asked for your parents’ permission before getting down on one knee. This doesn’t mean your partner needs to be ‘given away’ in the traditional sense, but it shows you respect her family and have cemented a solid relationship with them. If you’re loved one is exceptionally close to her family and friends, it may also be a nice idea to get them involved in the proposal in some way.
Get Her Nails Done
The biggest piece of advice we got when asking the C W Sellors team what they’d want their partner to know before proposing was to make sure she has her nails done. No one wants chipped nail varnish and overgrown cuticles when trying on their engagement ring for the first time, so encourage her to get her nails freshly painted before the big day. A great idea would be to get her best friend in on the action, and ask her to take your partner out for you. This way, you’re not risking dropping any hints yourself!
Incorporate Something Special
Another key piece of advice involves planning the main proposal itself, and incorporating something special to both of you into the event. Think about something, whether it be a place, food or music, that means a lot to you both and use it to create the ultimate romantic setting for your proposal. Maybe you pop the question where you first met, or play your guys’ favourite song in the background. It’s often the little details that make all the difference.
Plan What You’ll Say
Proposing can be overwhelming for both of you, so it’s a good idea to have a rough idea of what you’ll say when you get down on one knee. This doesn’t mean you need to have a script committed entirely to memory but make some notes and consider some important things you’d like to say. That way, when it comes to the important moment, you’re less likely to stumble over your words. It’s also a romantic idea to say her full name when asking the big question.
Capture a Photo
You’re only going to propose once, and while the memory of it will last forever, it would be amazing to have a physical copy of the moment on film. Whether you choose to hire a professional photographer or simply ask a friend to hide near by to capture your proposal for you, we guarantee your other half will appreciate having a photograph or video to look back on.
Get the Ring Right
Finally, and easily one of the most important things to consider when planning a proposal, is the engagement ring. She’s going to wear this ring for the rest of her life, so you need to get it right. If you need inspiration, start by looking at the jewellery she currently wears. Does she prefer silver or gold? That will help you decide on the metal type. Then consider if her jewellery collection consists of statement pieces or minimalistic styles and use this to decide on the diamond cut and carat. You can also enlist the help of their friends and family and get them to drop some hints, so you don’t risk spoiling the surprise!
