For the first time, Japanese watchmaker Seiko has launched a solar-powered dive watch with a GMT hand. The pair of designs, one in green and another in nautical blue, showcase their new in-house Calibre 5K62 with a local jumping GMT complication within their “Sumo” case. If you’re someone with a large wrist and a fondness for travel, then the new Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver watches will be for you. Their large cases, measuring to 45mm in diameter and 13.2mm height, is what gives them their “Sumo” nickname, a name given to the design by collectors to identify the Seiko watches of this shape and size. Many also argue the name refers to the 12 o’clock marker on the dial which resembles the underwear worn by Japanese sumo wrestlers. As for the case, the round barrel-shaped architecture is engineered from stainless steel with brushed and polished surfaces and promises a 200 metre water resistant rating thanks to the screw down closed case back and screw in crown positioned at 4 o’clock.
Placed on top of the Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver’s case is the essential unidirectional rotating bezel for those that want to take references SFK001J1 and SFK003J1 into the water for diving. The bezel is fitted with a gorgeous forest green or navy blue insert adorned with a white 60 minute scale and a Lumibrite dot at 12 o’clock for measuring elapsed dive times. Next to it is a sheet of scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on the inner surface for easy legibility of the dial. The dial of the Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver SFK001J1 watch pairs its dark blue bezel with an equally enchanting marine blue dial while the Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver SFK003J1 watch does the name with a deep green centrepiece.
The dials are subtly textured for a grained-like effect and joined by large Lumibrite markers on the rounded indexes, Sumo wrestler underpants-marker at 12 o’clock and the four bold central hands. The hands include two sword-shaped hour and minute hands, a lollipop seconds hand and a vivid orange GMT hand. The dial also features a traditional square-shaped date window at 3 o’clock and a new 24 hour scale beside the minute track, neatly two-toned to mark the day and night hours. The Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver SFK001J1 watch showcases its 24 hour scale in two shades of blue while the Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver SFK003J1 watch displays the day hours in a muted lime green and the night hours in the same forest green as its dial.
Powering the hours, minutes, seconds, date and GMT complication is the new Seiko 5K65 movement. Boasting ground-breaking solar-powered technology, the movement means the Seiko Prospex Sumo Solar GMT Diver watches will never need their battery replaced as the movement is naturally fuelled by natural and artificial light. Seiko assures this new in-house calibre has an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds a month. Finally, both references SFK001J1 and SFK003J1 are completed by a three-link stainless steel bracelet closed by a three-fold clasp with secure lock and push button release with extender.
