Why The Garmin MARQ 2 Captain Is The Ultimate Marine Smartwatch

Jewellery & Watch News

When it comes to premium marine GPS smartwatches, Garmin is certainly no amateur. Their Quatix collection is considered a go-to line for those with a love of water sports, whether it be diving, surfing, paddleboarding, sailing or powerboating. And while still attractive, the styling of these marine smartwatches is ultimately sporty and not always fitting to a formal situation. That’s where the Garmin MARQ 2 Captain watch comes in… Offering much of the same functionality as the Garmin Quatix, the MARQ 2 range delivers luxury materials worthy of a high-end dress watch.

Lightweight Case & Regatta Timer Bezel

While much of the Garmin Quatix collection features designs made from steel, fibre reinforced polymer and Corning Gorilla Glass, the Garmin MARQ 2 Captain smartwatch delivers significantly more luxurious materials including lightweight titanium, ceramic and scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass. The 46mm case is engineered from titanium for incredible lightness on the wrist while on top, a gorgeous blue ceramic inlay bezel presents regatta timer markings. Finally, rather than the stereotypical rubber bands you see on most marine smartwatches, the MARQ II Captain elects a gorgeous striped French Jacquard-weave strap coloured in a combination of navy, teal and sky blue.

AMOLED Touchscreen Display

Also trumping the Garmin Quatix watches is the display of the Garmin MARQ 2 Captain. Rather than the memory-in-pixel display with its 260 x 260 pixel display resolution, we’re promised a brand new AMOLED touchscreen display. This delivers even brighter colours, deeper blacks and improved responsiveness as well as a pixel resolution of 390 x 390. This makes viewing features like the full-colour TopoActive maps and BlueChart G3 Charts even more impressive.

16 Day Battery Life

Another benefit of the Garmin MARQ Gen 2 Captain watch is the battery life. While the original MARQ watch boasted a 12 day battery life – something already insanely impressive in a smartwatch – the new MARQ 2 Captain promises up to 16 days of power in smartwatch mode. Alongside that, we’re promised 21 days in Battery Saver Mode, up to 42 hours in GPS mode and up to 14 days in Expedition GPS mode.

Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ Technology

Like the previous edition, the new Garmin MARQ 2 Captain watch comes with multi-band GNSS including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo for better positioning than just GPS alone. For the first time, however, the design incorporates a new technology called SatIQ. Garmin suggests this gives secures superior positioning accuracy in any environment while also optimising the device’s battery life. This means you can use the GPS functionality while at our sea without worrying that your watch will be quickly drained of charge.

Jet Lag Advisor

Perfect for those that like to sail between time zones, the Garmin MARQ 2 Captain smartwatch comes with a new jet lag advisor. This feature is designed to help you diminish the effects of jet lag, by considering your sleep schedule and offering you a new one alongside exercise and light exposure recommendations. You can enter your travel details into the Garmin Connect smartphone app calendar and keep track of it all on your wrist and on your smartphone.

Regatta Timer

Now onto some of the many amazing marine features included on the Garmin MARQ II Captain watch. The Regatta Timer feature is fantastic for anyone that takes part in water-based racing. You can use the device to help you cross the start line exactly when the race begins by synchronising the regatta timer in the sail racing app with the official race countdown timer. You’ll be notified at one-minute intervals as the race start approaches. When you set the starting line, the device uses GPS data to indicate whether your boat will cross the start line before, after, or at the correct time to start the race.

Stream Data

If you have a boat that is equipped with compatible Garmin devices, you can view stream data on the wrist with your Garmin MARQ 2 Captain watch. View information such as water depth, engine RPM, wind, custom data and much more. You can also remote control key MFD features, including chart zoom, layout shortcut, Fusion® stereo, autopilot and more.

Auto Pilot Control

Is there anything more impressive than being able to control the direction of your boat with your watch? With the Garmin MARQ Gen 2 Captain watch, you can do just that. The Marine Autopilot app lets you control your boat once your watch is connected to a Garmin GHC 20 or compatible chartplotter. You can change heading, engage the autopilot heading hold to keep on a steady course, change the steering mode and perform a steering pattern.

Plus Lots More!

There are plenty of other Garmin marine smartwatch features to find within the Garmin MARQ 2 Captain including a man overboard feature which helps you execute a swift recovery should someone fall into the water. There’s also a waypoint marking feature so you can place chartplotter waypoints from anywhere on the boat. For when you’re on a land, there an abundance of health, wellbeing and navigational features to enjoy including a wrist based heart rate monitor, Pulse Ox sensor, preloaded sports apps, sleep tracking, GPS, golf and ski maps, Garmin Coach, daily workout suggestions, ABC sensors and so much more. You’ll also get music storage for up to 2,000 songs as well as access to streaming apps like Spotify and the Garmin Pay app which lets you make contactless payments from the wrist.
