Marco Bicego’s first true creation, the Marco Bicego Marrakech jewellery collection remains one of the Italian jewellery maker’s most iconic and distinctive collections handcrafted from hand-coiled 18ct gold and diamonds.
The story of the Marco Bicego jewellery company started in 1958, when Giuseppe Bicego founded his first gold workshop in the Veneto region of northern Italy specializing in gold chains. His son, Marco Bicego, spent much of his childhood playing and helping out in his father’s workshop eventually becoming trained by his father and other Italian gold artisans. Then one day in the workshop, a happy incident occurred when one of the machines malfunctioned and a gold chain became twisted. It was in this moment that a surge of inspiration motivated Marco Bicego to establish his own fine jewellery brand in the year 2000 and create his first 18ct gold jewellery collection, one that would later be named the Marco Bicego Marrakech line.
The twisted gold chain that Marco Bicego witnessed in his father’s workshop inspired what is now the Marco Bicego Marrakech jewellery collection. The unmistakable hand-twisted 18ct gold chains has become a defining feature of both the collection and Marco Bicego himself, imperfectly fluid and ever-changing like waves of gold across the skin. In fact, Marco Bicego describes these spiral-wound strands as sand dunes which is one of the reasons the Marco Bicego Marrakech jewellery collection is named as such.
Marco Bicego’s legendary coil technique is entirely exclusive to the Italian brand, crafted and shaped by the expert hands of craftsman and women to ensure it sits comfortably against the skin with its soft and sinuous form. The exquisite 18ct gold is meticulously hand wound in a spiral resulting in a supple and flowing shape. The contours of the golden ribbons conjure up the image of African desert dunes, elegantly moulded by the gentle touch of the wind, sparkling under the radiant sunlight. The spirals are lightweight but robustness and look just as beautiful worn alone as they do layered together.
