Gucci are no strangers to breaking the conventions of traditional design; we’ve seen it in their jewellery, their bags, shoes and of course, their watches. But one undeniably daring collection is that of the Gucci Grip, a series of unique watches inspired by the world of skateboarding…
Since Alessandro Michele took over the role as Gucci’s creative director back in 2015, we’ve seen more than ever before, the fashion House take risky and courageous steps towards creating a fresh and innovative identity. Risky as it may be, this direction has paid off and Gucci’s sales have soared up 42% since Alessandro’s arrival. Another of these daring steps comes from the release of the eccentric collection of Gucci Grip watches back in 2019 which see’s gold-hued metals, chunky bracelets and unique time displays formed into a series of unisex timepieces.
The Gucci Grip watch collection is named as such for its muse, the world of skateboarding and the way a rider’s trainers stick to the grip tape on a board. This notion is captured within the streamlined cushion-shaped cases, some of which come with groove detailing, and the solid link bracelets. The overall aesthetic is incredibly retro, harking back to the 1960’s and 70’s, especially the layout of the functions displayed on a rotating dial. The top arch displays the hours and the middle the minutes and in some Gucci Grip watches, a round aperture at the bottom reveals the date.
The Gucci Grip watch collection began with a range of 35mm and 38mm designs, both perfectly suited to both male and female wearers. Later, the addition of some 27mm models allowed for even daintier wrist to enjoy the vintage-inspired designs, these ones opting for no date window. Each of the sizes are available in a choice of yellow gold PVD or classic stainless steel with the majority choosing sleek horizontal grooving and the famous interlocking G motif spanning across the case. You can also choose from a selection of classic leather bands or block metal bracelets similarly engraved with the Gucci emblem.
More recently, the Italian watch manufacturer expanded the Gucci Grip watch series to include a range of designs finished in synthetic stone or PVD. There’s a handsome 38mm model finished in grey PVD and another in layered in black onyx synthetic stone alongside a smaller 35mm ladies watch unmissable for its pastel pink coral synthetic stone finish. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also recently seen the introduction of a range of 40mm Gucci Grip watches, these ones opting for a slightly different dial layout with the hours and minutes apertures situated on the right hand side. These designs still uphold the distinctively retro finish but add touches of sports luxury with a tachymeter scale and bold red detailing.
As you can tell, there is no shortage of Gucci Grip watches to choose from, all welcomed by lovers of vintage-inspired sports timepieces. The cases promise a water resistance of 30 metres, sapphire crystal glass and house a Swiss made quartz movements. Each Gucci Grip watch is also fitted with the brand’s exclusive interchangeable quick release strap technology so you can easily swap around straps depending on your mood. The designs will arrive in a floral jacquard topped packaging inspired by the world of Gucci ready-to-wear.
