The Georg Jensen Mobius Jewellery Collection

Jewellery & Watch News

Taking inspiration from a mathematical phenomenon known as the mobius strip, Georg Jensen has created an award-winning range of modern sterling silver jewellery characterised by sculptural shapes and minimalistic detail. Meet the Georg Jensen Mobius jewellery collection

If you were to run your finger around a mobius strip, you’d find yourself in a never-ending loop. One loop would not land you back where you started but upside down. After two loops, you’d be back at the beginning. How? The single-sided surface has no boundaries and is formed by joining ends of a rectangle with a twist at one end through 180 degrees. The shape is as beautiful as it is mesmerising and has captivated mathematics, scientists, artists and designers ever since it was discovered. One jewellery designer who fell in love with the unique shape was Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, the creative mind behind the Georg Jensen Mobius jewellery collection.

Swedish designer Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe was one of Georg Jensen’s most prolific and influential collaborators and is known as the world’s first ever female silversmith to have become internationally noted. She began her career during the late 1940’s when she moved to Paris and Cannes and opened up her own studio. Her handmade jewellery was characterised by its sculptural forms which followed the contours of the wearer’s body. It wasn’t long before her sterling silver masterpieces gained her a reputation in the area and as such clients like Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Ingrid Bergman and Billie Holiday.

A few years later, and Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe started her long-lasting partnership with Georg Jensen. One of her most famous designs is the Georg Jensen Vivianna Bangle, the brand’s first ever wristwatch launched in 1962 which as you can tell was named after its creator. The Vivianna watch is an unmoveable piece in the jewellery manufacturer’s collections; you can still find the simple, open-sided timepiece and its numberless mirror dial in their luxury watch line-up. Another creation by Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe is the Georg Jensen Dew Drop jewellery line which as its name suggests captures the image of drops of water in sterling silver.

Vivianna’s deep-rooted admiration for organic shapes and sculptural forms is also evident in the Georg Jensen Mobius jewellery collection which reinterprets the purity of a single line in a range of sterling silver rings, bangles and earrings. The designs you see today are just as contemporary now as they were when they were first conceived in 1968; each piece has a timeless quality that makes it a contemporary classic.

A staple piece for every jewellery lover is the Georg Jensen Mobius bangle which brings to life the designer’s love of natural geometry and symbolism. The distinctive shape with only one surface and one edge remains at the centre of the design, infinitely looping around your wrist in pure sterling silver. The Georg Jensen Mobius bangle is available in two sizes and looks especially breathtaking when the two are worn together, stacked along the body for a statement finish. For an even more dramatic look, pair the bangles with a selection of Georg Jensen Mobius rings which again offer the twisting sterling silver band that is both fluid and elegant.
