Seiko’s emblematic sports watch evolves for the wrist of a globetrotter with a 24-hour complication placed centre stage. Meet the new Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation watch and its trio of colourways: the SSK001 “Black Grape”, the SSK003 “Blueberry” and the SSK005 “Mikan Orange”.
When it comes to Seiko, it’s impossible to pick just one category of watches they succeed at. You’ve got their popular Prospex Divers collection, their dressier Presage line and their high-end Grand Seiko and King Seiko watches. Amongst all this, there’s also the Seiko 5 Sports watch, a selection of durable, outdoor watches suited just as much to the water as land. The design was first introduced back in 1968 before being relaunched in 2019. The premise of the family comes from five elements that appear in every design: an automatic movement, high water resistance, recessed crown at 4 o’clock, durable case and day and date display. And yet for the new Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation collection, the latter feature is tailored. We see the day complication removed to make room for a bold GMT hand at the centre of the dial.
As mentioned in the introduction, there are three Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation watches to choose from. The first is reference SSK001 “Black Grape” which as its name suggests delivers a smooth black dial combined with a matching 24-hour bezel subtly two-toned in grey and black to mark the day and night hours. Next is reference SSK003 “Blueberry” which opts for a rich navy blue dial and a black and blue decorated bezel. Both of these models elect classic silvered hardware for the hours, minutes and seconds and a red-coloured GMT hand.
Lastly, our personal favourite out of the trio is reference SSK005 “Mikan Orange”. This design screams underwater legibility with a bright orange display paired with gold-coloured hands and markers and a black GMT hand. To match, the rotating bezel is adorned with a gold-coloured scale and triangle marker at 12 o’clock. The hardware across all three models is applied with Lumibrite inserts and joined by a magnified date window at 3 o’clock.
The spec for the rest of the Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation watches all match up. They all present durable stainless steel cases with both brushed and polished finishings, sitting on the wrist at 42.5mm in diameter and 13.6mm in height. On both the front and back, Hardlex crystal glass ensures a decent level of scratch resistant and allows for easy legibility of the dial one way and the movement the other. The movement housed within the Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation watches is the Seiko Calibre 4R34. It is automatic winding and delivers a 3Hz frequency, a 41 hour power reserve and 24 jewels.
Completing each Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation watch is a strong Jubilee-style bracelet engineered from stainless steel to match the case. The bracelet has five horizontal links, alternating between brushed and polished finishing which closes by a classic folding buckle with secure lock.
