Jewellery & Watch News
Following the success of the notably modern and skeletonised Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic watches of last year, the Swiss watch manufacturer reveals a new range of six ceramic watches for 2022, this time putting their focus back on the retro aesthetics of the original Captain Cook models from 1962 and adding sought-after ISO certification.
Rado’s legacy with ceramic holds them in high regard for many, and it’s a material we have seen utilised in their Captain Cook collection for quite some time. Before recently, the material was typically used for the scratch resistant bezel, then last year Rado used ceramic across the entire design with the launch of the Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic line. The series revealed high-tech ceramic and plasma ceramic cases and bracelets paired with smoked skeletonised dials. While the contemporary design was a win, it wasn’t the most suited to those who still wished to use their Rado Captain Cook watch for diving. For audiences of that kind, let us introduce you to the 2022 Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic watches…
The Case & Strap
There are six new Rado Captain Cook Ceramic watches to choose from. There are two in matte black high-tech ceramic secured by a matching black ceramic bracelet or rubber strap and two in a gorgeous olive-green ceramic, again strapped to the wrist by a bracelet or green rubber band. Lastly, we’re treated to two plasma ceramic cases both fitted with plasma ceramic bracelets and paired with a sunray grey or sunray blue dial. All the cases are incredibly scratch resistant, lightweight and hypoallergenic. The plasma ceramic differs in its appearance for its unique metallic sheen.
The cases of each Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic watch measures to 43mm in diameter and 14.6mm in height with a lug-to-lug distance of 49.8mm. They are monobloc in design and come equipped with the famous unidirectional rotating bezel on top. The bezels themselves are crafted from stainless steel but come with case matching ceramic inserts for displaying the 60 minute scale. The scale is printed in white lacquer and pairs with a triangle-shaped marker at 12 o’clock set with glow in the dark Superluminova. The Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic watches also deliver screw down crowns in steel, solid case backs in titanium engraved with two seahorses and box-shaped sapphire crystal glass. Unlike the skeletonised models of last year, these new ceramic diver’s watches are certified to ISO 6425 standards and offer a 300 metre water resistant rating.
The Dial
Continuing to ensure effortless use while diving, the new Rado Captain High Tech Ceramic watches neglect the smoked skeletonised centre of last year’s release and retain the retro aesthetic of the original Captain Cook line. The display features the familiar combination of trapezoid and baton shaped indexes and oversized hands for the hours, minutes and seconds, all filled with Superluminova. The hour hand maintains the large arrowhead while the seconds hand features a smaller arrow-shaped tip. The dials also showcase the famous spinning ruby anchor logo at 12 o’clock and a matching red printed date window at 3 o’clock. The dial comes in black for the black ceramic models, olive-green for the green cased references and sunray blue or sunray grey for the plasma ceramic watches.
The Movement
Unsurprisingly, Rado nominates their well-known Calibre R763 automatic winding movement to power the Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic watches. The movement is otherwise known as the Swatch Group’s Powermatic 80 Calibre and features an increased power reserve of 80 hours and a Nivachron balance spring for anti-magnetic properties. We’re also warranted 25 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and classic hours, minutes, seconds and date complication.
