With the coronation of King Charles III just around the corner, the country prepares to celebrate with neighbours and loved ones by hosting street parties and get-togethers of every kind. Of course, here at C W Sellors, we are also joining in on the festivities with the launch of our own King’s Coronation jewellery collection. The sterling silver and gold designs feature the new commemorative hallmark approved by the British Hallmarking Council and the four UK Assay Offices.
As anyone with a love of fine jewellery and its craftsmanship will know, UK hallmarking provides a unique and identifying feature on every design to confirm its legitimacy. The system dates back to the 14th century and has provided both jewellery makers like us and our customers the assurance of excellence and origin. For example, every piece of C W Sellors jewellery is stamped with five special hallmarks. These include a mark for the year it was manufactured (Y) for 2023, the makers/sponsors mark (CWS) for C W Sellors, the metal standard (375 & Crown for 9ct gold, and 925 & Lion for sterling silver) and the assay office (Anchor) for Birmingham.
For 2023, in celebration of the coronation of King Charles III, the British Hallmarking Council has sanctioned a new commemorative component mark that can be stamped on any precious metal jewellery from the 1st of March 2023 to the end of 2024. In turn, C W Sellors will be honouring this mark for a limited time with our King’s Coronation jewellery collection. Each of the designs within the series are stamped with the regular five hallmarks alongside the new commemorative hallmark for the coronation which shows King Charles III’s head in profile.
The coronation hallmark has been designed by Thomas Fattorini, taking inspiration from a medal by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Since the new commemorative hallmark can only be used for a limited time, the jewellery it adorns captures the historic event and provides a narrative that jewellery of any other era will never have. The necklaces are created using six rounded-square discs, each stamped with one of the six hallmarks. We also have a range of adjustable bracelets in this same style.
For lovers of semi-precious gemstone jewellery, you’ll enjoy our colourful range of King’s Coronation Double-Sided pendants and rings. We have set these with some of our most popular gemstones including Whitby Jet, Blue John, lapis lazuli, malachite, mother of pearl, turquoise and diamond. The double-sided pendants have two differing gemstones on either side, so you can change around the look of your jewellery in a moment. These pendants and rings are still stamped with the six hallmarks, including the new coronation hallmark, but they are slightly less obvious hiding on either the sides of the pendants or on the band of the ring.
