In celebration of their 140th anniversary, Seiko have uncovered a remarkable series of limited edition timepieces inspired by the beauty of Japan’s landscapes. Part of the festivities was a limited edition trio of Seiko Presage Island Green watches designed to imitate the enchanting wilderness of Iriomote Island and a Seiko Astron GPS Solar Yozakura Limited Edition inspired by the legendary Japanese cherry blossom tree. Alongside this, the brand have unveiled a formidable piece as part of their Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series, this time reminiscent of the sunlight at dawn: meet the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Atsuki Limited Edition watch.
Seiko’s impressive history is always worth celebrating. Founded in 1881, Seiko was the brainchild of Kintaro Hattori who at just 21 years old began establishing his company as the leading watch brand in Japan. With a mission to be at the forefront of design, technology and traditional watch manufacturing techniques, he lived by his famous historic motto, “Always one step ahead of the rest”. These words continue to inspire every new Seiko watch that you see today including the new 140th Anniversary Limited Editions. One thing Seiko is remarkably good at is creating watches that beautifully personify the landscapes, seascapes and nature that surround their factories in Japan. Whether it’s the legendary Grand Seiko Snowflake and its dial which mimics the texture of snow that falls outside the windows of their mountain top workshops or the new Grand Seiko Shirakaba Limited Edition inspired by the white birch trees that thrive in Japan, Seiko is able to bind time, beauty and nature into special creations. The Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Atsuki Limited Edition is no exception, boasting an all-black aesthetic with delicate gold accents which together bring to life the image of sunlight at dawn.
Dressed in black hard-coated stainless steel, the 39.3mm case of the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Atsuki watch is designed to echo the dark sky before sunrise. As with all Seiko Presage watches in the Sharp Edges Series, the case is precisely engineered with modern angles, crisp edges and a subtle hairline finish that creates a pleasing multi-dimensional effect and an exquisite, polished finish. Similarly, the black hard-coated stainless steel bracelet is subtly faceted yet still sits comfortably on the wrist thanks to the slightly curved screw down exhibition case back. The limited edition of 3,000 pieces is also supplied with an additional black calfskin leather strap.
While the case replicates the dark sky, the stunning gold-detailed dial of the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Atsuki watch symbolises the morning twilight of early dawn with a golden-brown graduation effect designed to foreshadow the approaching day. The dial also incorporates the unique Japanese Asanhoa, also known as a heap leaf pattern, a design used extensively in Japanese culture since the Heian period over a thousand years ago. The Asanoha leaf was traditionally used as material for fabrics with its pattern still holding an important significance in Japanese culture today, symbolising strong growth and good health.
The fascinating texture finish of the dial pairs perfectly with the polished angular profile of the case and bracelet, which together play with light at every turn. Gold appliques lay centre stage alongside sharp gold hands for hours and minutes adorned with a Lumibrite coating. The Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Atsuki watch is also home to a slender arrow-shaped seconds hand and a gold-bordered date window at 3 o’clock protected by scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass treated with an anti-reflective coating. Each of the complications are powered by the 6R35 automatic winding movement, an in-house calibre which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours, 24 jewels and an impressive accuracy of +25 to -15 seconds per day.
