Since its launch in 2017, Seiko’s Prospex Black Series collection has remained one of its most coveted releases reviving three signature designs in a stealthy all-black aesthetic inspired by night diving. The sleek black cases and matching black dials represent the night sky while the dials opt for instant legibility under the waves with bold orange detailing on the minutes hand and Lumibrite treatment. For 2021, Seiko have reissued the popular series with a brand-new collection of Seiko Prospex Black Series watches under the nicknames ‘Monster,’ ‘Tuna,’ and ‘Samurai’.
Seiko Prospex Black Series Monster SRPH13K1 Limited Edition
First up in the 2021 Seiko Black Series collection is the Monster SRPH13K1 Limited Edition. Limited to 7,000 pieces, the design takes its name from its distinctive toothy bezel which Seiko collectors associate with a monster’s jaw. It’s 42.4mm stainless steel case is treated with an obvious black PVD coating. The bezel is also black with a luminous triangle marker at 12 o’clock and sharp Arabic numerals at the 15, 30 and 45 positions for the diver’s scale. Hardlex crystal glass protects the vintage Lumibrite decorated dial and characteristic orange tipped minutes hand. Beneath the dial is the 4R36 automatic winding movement which alongside a power reserve of 41 hours provides central hands for hours, minutes and seconds and a double day and date window at 3 o’clock. The movement is protected behind a screw down case back promising a water resistance of 200 metres. To complete the Seiko Prospex Black Series Monster SRPH13K1 Limited Edition, a black silicon strap is added alongside a black coated pin buckle.

Seiko Prospex Black Series Tuna SNE577P1 Limited Edition
One of Seiko’s most popular “nicknames” is the Tuna, a design named after its extraordinary cushion-shaped case which is unexpectedly sculpted like that of a tuna can. The Seiko Prospex Black Series Tuna SNE577P1 Limited Edition measures to 46.7mm in diameter and features a similarly hefty bezel adored with a 60 minute divers scale, a screw in crown and a screw down case back water resistant to 200 metres. Like it’s sibling above, the case is engineered from stainless steel with a black hard coating, equipped with a black silicon band, Hardlex crystal glass and a black dial. It differs however by the innovative movement hidden within. The Seiko Prospex Black Series Tuna SNE577P1 watch is powered by the V157 solar powered calibre which boasts a 10 month power reserve once its fully charged and an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month. The calibre equips the limited edition of 5,000 piedes with hour, minute and seconds function and a large date window at 4 o’ clock. The movement is also fitted with a special overcharge prevention function to avoid damage and overheating to any components.

Seiko Prospex Black Series Samurai SRPH11K1 Limited Edition
Last up in the trio of Seiko Black Series 2021 collection is the Samurai SRPH11K1 Limited Edition. The Seiko Samurai was first launched back in 2004 and was awarded its name for its central hands which resemble a sword. The famous hands now find themselves on a smooth black backdrop with the seconds hand dressed in a neon shade of orange. The black dial once again pairs with the black silicon strap and black hard coated stainless steel case measuring in at 43.8mm on the wrist. As we’ve come to expect, the design includes Hardlex crystal glass, a screw in crown, a 200 metre water resistant rating and a screw down case back engraved with its limited edition status out of 8,000 pieces. The Seiko Prospex Black Series Samurai SRPH11K1 Limited Edition is also home to the 4R35 automatic winding which delivers central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, a date window at 3 o’clock and a power reserve of 41 hours.
