Reviewing the Bell & Ross BR 03 92 Radiocompass Limited Edition

Jewellery & Watch News

In their quest to make a supreme pilots watch, Bell and Ross have succeeded more times than not, and yet again their keen eye for aviation influences is demonstrated with the new Bell & Ross BR 03 92 Radiocompass watch. The limited edition of 999 pieces mimics the display of an onboard radio receiver with long and vibrant hands for the hours, minutes and seconds.

You’ll be forgiven if you’ve never seen or heard of a radio compass before, and that goes for those of you that even frequent cockpits. The onboard radio receiver is typically only found in RAF aircrafts, used to detect the position and direction of an aircraft via beacons on the ground. It has on many occasions relieved pilots out of tricky situations, often in low visibility conditions like storms, fog and the dark. The design of the navigational tool is largely characterised by its colourful hardware and double-branched hands which extend across both sides of the dial. It is this aesthetic that is revived in the new Bell & Ross BR 03 92 Radiocompass Limited Edition and don’t worry, the device doesn’t track your location but classically tells the time.

The Bell & Ross BR 03 92 Radiocompass watch cleverly reinterprets the graphic hands and bold graduations of real radio compass instruments to deliver a classic time-only timepiece with exceptional readability. It features three hands in total, with two of them adorned with extra long branches so at first glance it seems as though the face has five hands. The largest hand which is dressed in orange is for the hours, indicated by the H motif at the arrow-shaped end. The minutes hand comes with similar signage, this time an M and yellow colouring. Lastly, the seconds hand retains its traditional style at the centre and comes dressed in a vibrant green.

The combination of colours on the hours, minutes and seconds is easily identifiable against the matte black dial of the Bell & Ross BR 03 92 Radiocompass Limited Edition. The hands are also adorned with inserts of Superluminova in different colours, yellow for the hour hand and green for the minutes hand, for legibility in the dark. The dial also reveals an interesting layout for the numerals with them angled towards the centre of the dial, rather than towards the wearer. It’s a really nice touch to the design, once again honouring its cockpit counterpart. The numerals elect a specific typeface known to the aviation industry as well as blue-emitting Superluminova inserts.

Matching the black finish of the dial, the case of the Bell & Ross BR 03 92 Radiocompass watch is engineered from matte black ceramic. It measures to 42mm in diameter and 10.4mm in height and offers a 100 metre water resistant rating, sapphire crystal glass and a screw down case back. Housed within is the BR-CAL.302 automatic winding movement which takes its base from the Sellita SW300-1. Alongside 25 jewels, we’re promised a standard 38 hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Lastly, the limited edition of 999 pieces comes equipped with a black rubber strap closed by a black PVD pin buckle.
