Jewellery & Watch News

Oris has no shortage of releases linked to ocean conservation and quite frankly, we consider them one of the most detrimental luxury watch brands in support of such causes. This year alone, they announced climate neutrality with a promise to publish a sustainability report for 2022. We’ve also seen the release of several limited editions designed in aid of similar conservation charities like that of the Aquis Dat Watt and the GMT Whale Shark watch. Joining these in a fight for ocean sustainability is two new Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches each adorned with a unique dial engineered entirely from PET recycled plastic.
It’s difficult to comprehend that over 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans every year with the same materials making up 80% of all marine debris. As expected, this has devastating effects on not only the life living in the water but the entire environment, the economy and us on solid ground too. Swiss watch manufacturer Oris has been fighting this very cause for over a decade now, since the beginning of their “Change for the Better” campaign, a campaign designed to highlight the importance of saving our environment. Back in 2019, they partnered with Pacific Garbage Screening, now renamed to Everwave, to release the Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition. The design drew attention to the uninhibited consumption of plastics and the pollution those plastics cause to our ocean and featured a special case back featuring a medallion crafted from recycled ocean plastic. Following suit, the new duo of Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches also showcase elements made from PET plastic but this time it’s brought centre stage on the dial.
I think it’s safe to say that the dials of the new Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches are some of the most unique we have ever seen – and that’s not just because of the exceptional array of colours and shapes found within them. Instead, it is actually the process by which PET plastics are recycled that ensures no two Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches are the same, each offering their own exquisite pattern and colour palette. Despite this, Oris have said the series will not be limited and they will continue to engineer the designs for as long as there is demand.
As it stands, there are two Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches to choose from, the first in 41.5mm and the second in 36.5mm. Other than their dials, the pair retain the format of the rest of the Oris Aquis collection with a robust stainless steel profile, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a stainless steel bracelet and a water resistance of 300 metres. The bezel is treated to a handsome grey ceramic insert bezel, a nice touch that doesn’t take away from the colourful centre, adorned with a 60 minute scale for diving adventures. The case is also equipped with a screw in crown and a mineral glass case back.
Through the glass case back, you can witness the Oris 733 automatic winding calibre hard at work, a Swiss made movement based on the Sellita SW 200-1 and adorned with Oris’ famous red oscillating rotor. The movement fuels the central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, the date window at 6 o’clock and promises a power reserve of 38 hours. Each of the complications are presented in typical Aquis style on the colourful recycled dial through white Superluminova inserts and a classic lollipop-shaped seconds hand.
