NOMOS Tangente 38 Doctors Without Borders 50 Years Watch Review

Jewellery & Watch News

Doctors Without Borders saves lives all over the world and NOMOS Glashutte, who have been supporting the organisation since 2012, have created over 10,000 watches in aid of their efforts – and in turn raised a sizeable amount of donations. 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the humanitarian medical organisation and in honour of the occasion, and to assist after a tough twelve months, NOMOS have launched a new Tangente 38 Doctors Without Borders 50 Years Limited Edition watch.

50 Years of Medecins Sans Frontieres

Doctors Without Borders, translating from Medecins Sans Frontieres in French, was founded in 1971 by a small team of doctors and journalists. Now, it is a global organisation leading and funding emergency aid projects all around the world including natural disasters, malnutrition, forced migrations and disease. The last twelve months has been tough for all of us, individuals and organisations alike, and Doctors Without Borders is no exception, having struggled greatly to continue their efforts particularly battling with issues surrounding travelling and fundraising. To support their work further and to celebrate their 50th anniversary, NOMOS Glashutte have launched a new Doctors Without Borders Limited Edition watch of which 2,021 pieces will be made and each sold will raise 100 euros for the organisation.

This year’s pandemic has made our operations, logistics and travels more difficult and more expensive. The funds we receive from the sales of these watches are needed now more urgently than ever.” - Christian Katzer, general director of the German section of MSF.

The NOMOS Tangente 38 “Doctors Without Borders” 50 Years Watch

Like other Nomos Doctors Without Borders watches before it, the new Tangente 38 Limited Edition is characterised almost entirely by its Arabic numeral at 12 dressed in red. The colour red has become synonymous with Doctors Without Borders, and of course of emergency aid all over the world. For the first time, the wording “‘50 ANS DE MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES’ is included on the very edge of the dial at 6 o’clock. This replaces NOMOS’ usual ‘Made in Germany’ badge in celebration of the humanitarian medical organisation’s 50th birthday. The same wording is engraved on the closed stainless steel case back alongside its limited edition status out of 2,021 pieces.

The NOMOS Tangente watch collection has been one of the brand’s bestselling collections for over 25 years and its classic and contemporary aesthetic has been used before for their special edition Doctors Without Borders watches. This is the first occasion, however, that the watch has been offered with a grey textile strap. The iconic Bauhaus design ethos of the Tangente remains throughout the NOMOS Tangente 38 Doctors Without Borders 50 Years watch with its classic round stainless steel case, angular lugs and a slim unassuming bezel. The case is water resistant to 30 metres and measures to 37.5 millimetres in diameter and 6.7 millimetres in height, allowing it to slip easily under the cuff of a shirt.

Topping the case is scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, protecting the white silver-plated galvanized dial adored with the emblematic red marker at 12 o’clock, black oxidized central hands for hours and minutes, matching black Arabic numerals and indexes and a snailed small seconds dial at 6 o’clock. Powering the NOMOS Tangente 38 Doctors Without Borders 50 Years Limited Edition is the manual winding Alpha movement built in-house by the Glashutte-based manufacturer. It boasts rhodium plated finishes, tempered blued screws and Glashutte ribbing, sadly all hidden behind the closed case back. The movement has also been adjusted according to chronometer standards, promising exceptional levels of accuracy, and delivers a stop seconds mechanism, 17 jewels and a power reserve of 43 hours.
