NOMOS Glashutte Club Automatic 175 Years Special Edition Review

Jewellery & Watch News

NOMOS continues the celebrations of 175 years of Glashutte, one of the world’s greatest watchmaking centres, with a new trio of NOMOS Club Automatic Special Edition watches. Delivered in a trio of colourways including onyx, navy and olive, the new limited editions of 175 pieces combine the talent of Glashutte’s handcraft with the affordable, everyday wearing sense that NOMOS has become renowned for.

The NOMOS Club Automatic Special Editions are the third set in a series that commemorates 175 years of watchmaking in the Glashutte region of Germany. Late last year, we saw the release of three Lambda special editions and a trio of NOMOS Ludwig watches, both of which beautifully commemorate the home to some of the world’s most notable watch brands and watchmaking techniques. The NOMOS Glashutte Club Automatic 175 Years watches follows suit, this time delivering the casual and sporty aesthetics of the Club collection which has become the ideal entrance model for those just getting into luxury watches.

There are three NOMOS Glashutte Club Automatic 175 Years Special Edition watches to choose from, each with their own dial colourway and strap. The first under reference 753.S1 is delivered with a handsome onyx black galvanised dial and a NOMOS Sport bracelet. This bracelet design was only recently introduced to the German watch manufacturer’s range of handmade straps and is engineered from 145 individual parts and a deployment buckle. The second variant under reference 753.S2 boasts a navy blue dial and a matching navy textile strap and pin buckle. The third, and possibly our favourite reference is 753.S3 with its stunning olive green dial and a beautifully contrasting light grey textile strap.

Whichever colourway you lean towards, legibility is made a priority with generously proportioned typography adorning each NOMOS Club Automatic 175 Years watch. Bold Arabic numerals, sleek indexes and central hands for hours and minutes are dressed in glow in the dark white Superluminova while a nicely balanced, recessed and snailed subsidiary dial at 6 o’clock delivers small seconds. The dial is also detailed with the iconic NOMOS logo at 12 o’clock and the words “Made in Germany” at the bottom.

In honour of their hometown of Glashutte, each NOMOS Glashutte Club Automatic 175 Years Special Edition watch is engineered using the brand’s finest materials, techniques and movements. Each case is presented in robust stainless steel, measuring to 40mm in diameter, and paired with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment. As part of the NOMOS Club collection, the new limited editions are designed for everyday adventures, especially those near water, with 200 metre water resistant screw down case backs. On turning each NOMOS special edition over, you are not only greeted to the automatic winding calibre housed within, but you can see the unique whale motif that has become a symbol of their resistance.

Exposed through the sapphire crystal case back is the DUW 5001 calibre, the first NOMOS self-winding movement that was made entirely in-house in their Glashutte watchmaking facilities. The mechanical movement has been adjusted according to chronometer standards delivering an accuracy of -4 to +6 seconds per day and is equipped with the legendary proprietary NOMOS swing system also known as their in-house built escapement. The movement also promises a power reserve of up to 43 hours.
