Jewellery & Watch News
As part of their extensive Watches & Wonders 2021 releases, Montblanc have unveiled two new additions to their legendary 1858 watch collection. The new Montblanc 1858 Automatic watches continue to take inspiration from the historic Minerva watches from the 1920s and 1930s but with a fresh all-blue colourway.
For some, the word Montblanc conjures up images of the mountain and for others it’s a Swiss brand’s range of fountain pens. Since their founding in 1906, Montblanc have designed an endless supply of luxury writing instruments with fountain pens, ballpoint pens and rollerball pens supporting almost 80 years of their history. It wasn’t until 1997 that the Swiss manufacturer tried their hand in the luxury watch industry, and as expected, with their already carefully selected team of craftsmen and women, the transition was effortless. The first Montblanc watch was the Meisterstück, named after their already popular Meisterstück pen and by 2006, they were a full-fledged manufacture. Designed and crafted in the Montblanc watch atelier in Le Locle, Switzerland, today’s Montblanc watches follow a strict set of schedules to ensure precision, durability and beauty are to the highest level. The same can be said for the Montblanc 1858 watch collection home to the two new Montblanc 1858 Automatic watches.
The Montblanc 1858 watch collection revives the legendary Minerva watches from the 1920’s which were designed for military personnel and used for outdoor exploration. While somehow capturing the spirit of mountain adventurers and the essence of returning to nature, these stunning men’s watches also bring to life modern aesthetics with satin-finished stainless steel cases, slim bevelled horns, shiny ceramic bezels and case backs engraved with the emblematic Mont Blanc Mountain. Over the last few months, several new additions have made their way into the 1858 family including their Montblanc 1858 Geosphere watch which commemorates the world’s Seven Summit mountaineering challenge with a rare 24 hour complication marked by two rotating globes and the Montblanc 1858 24H watch which uniquely indicates the time using a lone luminescent, red-coloured hand.
Likewise at home in the Montblanc 1858 watch series is the two new Montblanc 1858 Automatic watches. The first is a classic time-only model under reference MB126758. It’s sleek stainless steel profile follows suit to other timepieces in the collection measuring to 40 millimetres in diameter with a fixed steel bezel, domed sapphire crystal glass and a water resistance of 100 metres. What separates it, however, is its elegant blue colourway with blue detailing found on the compass bezel, a blue calfskin leather strap and a deep navy blue dial. The dial of the Montblanc 1858 Automatic time-only watch is wonderfully detailed with a railway minute track, cathedral-shaped hour and minute hands and classic Arabic numerals coated in glow in the dark Superluminova. Powering the hands is an automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 38 hours which is kept hidden behind reinforced screw down case back engraved with a picture of the Mont Blanc Mountain, a compass and two crossed ice pick-axes to highlight the spirit of mountain exploration.
Delivered alongside the time-only model is the Montblanc 1858 Automatic Chronograph watch, another gorgeous blue timepiece but with a slightly larger case size of 42 millimetres and chronograph complication at its core. The case of the 1858 Automatic Chronograph under reference MB126912 is also engineered from stainless steel with domed sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating, an engraved screw down case back and water resistance of 100 metres, however its 42mm profile includes a bi-directional rotating compass bezel in blue ceramic and two blue subsidiary counters on the navy dial. Driving the central chronograph seconds hand, 30 minutes counter and small seconds is an automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 48 hours and 27 jewels. The familiar cathedral-shaped hands and Arabic numerals ensure easy legibility while the blue Sfumato calfskin leather strap promises exceptional comfort.
