Seiko’s highly collectible Prospex Speedtimer returns, this time as a 10,000 piece limited edition inspired by the crystal trophies given to celebrate only the best sports, cultural and business successes. Say hello to the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Crystal Trophy SSC909P1 watch…
Back in 1964, Japanese watch manufacturer Seiko developed a stopwatch equipped with their innovative heart-shaped cam mechanism which allowed for the measurement of 1/100th second intervals. Shortly after, in 1969, Seiko then introduced it’s Speedtimer watch which was equipped with their legendary Calibre 6139; it became world’s first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. In honour of this, Seiko relaunched their Seiko Speedtimer late last year with a series of exclusive designs. The first was an automatic chronograph designed in tribute of the original 1964 stopwatch, another was a limited edition chronograph and the third was a range of solar-powered chronographs. It is the latter design which is reclaimed today in the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Crystal Trophy watch, this time electing an icy blue dial inspired by crystal trophies.
Seiko speaks on the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 watch: “We have put in the message that we want all challengers who have overcome their limits or achieved difficult goals and have completed their mission regardless of race, gender, or handicap to take a trophy of life. This is a story that can be created only by SEIKO who has a long history of sports timekeeping and PROSPEX which has always been supporting the challengers. This model is inspired by a crystal trophy widely used for rewarding sports achievements as well as cultural and business achievements since crystal is a material that represents the glow of the inner beauty. Crystal trophy symbolizes the message the SPEEDTIMER collection wants to convey: “tribute to all the challengers.”
As its novelty, let’s start with the dial of the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Crystal Trophy SSC909P1 watch. Its stunning pale blue finish is designed to evoke the colour and light reflections of the crystal trophies given to those that have reached the pinnacle of their objective. The icy blue display is then paired with contrasting black chronograph counters detailed with white markings, silvered hands for the hours and minutes, an arrow-tipped chronograph seconds hand and faceted silvered hour markers. The hour and minute hands are complete with glow in the dark Superluminova and a date window is positioned between the 4 and 5 o’clock markers.
The case and movement of the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Crystal Trophy SSC909P1 Limited Edition follow suit to the solar-powered Speedtimer chronographs launched last year. It sits on the wrist at 39mm in diameter and at a height of 13.3mm with a stunning barrel-shaped architecture, a knurled screw in crown, inverted pushers and scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment. On top, the smooth black bezel delivers a suitably sporty tachymeter scale while on the back, a screw down solid steel case back ensures a 100 metre water resistant rating. Completing the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Crystal Trophy watch is a solid stainless steel bracelet with contrasting black hard coated central links and a three-fold clasp with push button release.
Hidden within the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC909P1 Limited Edition watch is the brand’s solar-powered V192 movement. It not only charges entirely using light, both natural and artificial, but it promises an impressive accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. The functions delivered by the movement include a small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 24 hour indicator at 3 o’clock and a 60 minute chronograph counter at 6 o’clock. The hand for the latter also works as a power reserve indicator.
