This year marks the 60th birthday of TAG Heuer’s famous Carrera watch and in celebration of the event, the Swiss watchmaker have unveiled a huge collection of new designs. Some of the most distinctive models in the line-up include two Carrera Chronograph “Glassbox” watches with unusual box-domed sapphire crystal glass inspired by the clean aesthetics of the original Carrera watches from the 1960’s. Sharing this quality is also the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon watch which combines the bezel-less look with a rare tourbillon complication at 6 o’clock.
There are only a few luxury watchmakers capable of creating a tourbillon watch and TAG Heuer have proved themselves as one of them on several occasions. The exclusive watchmaking feat involves utilizing a continuously rotating cage around the escapement to help counteract the drag effect of gravity, in turn helping to keep the accuracy of the mechanical movement. TAG Heuer has incorporated the tourbillon complication in several Carrera watches before, typically pairing the hypnotic mechanism with highly modernized skeletonized dials and large, sporty cases. For the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon watch however, the brand has created one of their most refined tourbillon watches yet by pairing the mechanism with a timeless blue dial, a slender 42mm case and deeply domed sapphire crystal glass.
As mentioned in the introduction, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon watch showcases the brand’s new “Glassbox” design inspired by the original Carrera’s of the 1960’s that had unique domed acrylic crystal. In the same way, the tourbillon edition has unique, deeply domed sapphire crystal glass which falls over onto the sides of the case giving the watch an almost bezel-less look. The way the glass overflows onto the case sides also gives the dial an unusual finish with the minutes track readable from a 90 degree angle. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon watch comes in a little larger than its chronograph-only counterparts at 42mm in diameter but still opts for the same angled lugs, brushed case sides and piston-shaped chronograph pushers. The stainless steel case also upholds the Carrera collection’s sporty nature with a 100 metre water resistant rating.
Placed upon a circular brushed nautical blue dial is the one-minute tourbillon feature of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon watch. Here, you can watch as the rotating cage continuously spins around the escapement increasing the movement’s accuracy. The dial is joined by two deep azure subsidiary dials with high contrast silver rings for the 30 minutes and 12 hours chronograph counters. The chronograph seconds is added at the centre in bright orange to pair with the punctuating orange markers at the dial’s circumference. There are also two sword-shaped hands with Superluminova coating for the hours and minutes and faceted silvered hour markers.
Powering the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon watch is the Calibre TH20-09, an automatic winding movement with a total of 33 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 65 hours. You can admire the movement through the watch’s exhibition case back when it’s not secured to your wrist by the blue calfskin leather strap. The strap is adorned with tone-on-tone stitching and closes by a stainless steel folding buckle.
