IWC Launches Their First Blue Ceramic Watch for Laureus Sport for Good 2021 Limited Edition

Jewellery & Watch News

Sport has the power to change the world”. That’s the belief of the Laureus Sport for Good foundation, a charity founded under the Patronage of Nelson Mandela with an aim to encourage children and young people to overcome violence, discrimination and disadvantage in their lives through sport. The foundation was first established in 2000 and just a few years later, IWC Schaffhausen became the Global Partner. Every year since, the luxury watch brand has launched a special edition watch in support of the charity and for 2021, that watch is the IWC Pilots Automatic Laureus Sport for Good Limited Edition, the brand’s first timepiece with a blue ceramic case.

Since the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was established, they have helped over six million children and teenagers become involved in more that 250 projects worldwide, programmes that use sport to promote social change and end violence and discrimination. Every programme Laureus supports addresses at least one of the following six issues, all of which align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: Health, Education, Women and Girls, Employability, Inclusive Society and Peaceful Society. In a similar fashion, IWC holds a drawing competition every year and asks children and teenagers to create a drawing under one of these themes. The winner’s creation will be featured on the next IWC Laureus Sport for Good Limited Edition watch.

For 2021, the IWC Pilots Automatic Laureus Sport for Good watch marks the brand’s 15th special edition designed in honour of the charity and features the artwork of 12-year-old Melissa Mejía Castilla from Colombia. She created a wonderful decoration entitled “Vivir en Armonía” or Living in Peace which can be found engraved onto the titanium screw down case back. The engraving serves as a reminder that a portion of the proceeds from sales goes to help support Laureus Sport for Good programmes.

Like it’s fourteen predecessors, the dial of the IWC Pilots Automatic Laureus Sport for Good watch is also produced in a distinctive “Laureus” blue colour which is intended as a symbol of hope. The rest of its layout follows in the footsteps of previous IWC Pilot’s watches with large Arabic numerals in white, black coated hands for the hours and minutes with white Superluminova inserts and a slender black seconds hand tipped in red. Each of these functions, alongside the date window at 3 o’clock, is powered by the IWC automatic calibre 32111 with 21 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 120 hours.

As well as honouring such an impressive organisation, the new IWC Pilots Automatic Laureus Sport for Good Limited Edition makes history as the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer’s first ever blue ceramic watch. The 41mm case is engineered through no easy of process. In fact, its manufacturing is quite complex, combining powered zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides to get the correct shade of blue before being  shaped and sintered in a furnace. The result, however, is stunning and the scratch resistant, royal blue finish looks perfectly placed next to its matching “Laureus” blue dial.

To match with the rest of the blue aesthetic, the IWC Pilots Automatic Laureus Sport for Good watch for 2021 is secured to the wrist by a blue rubber strap with a textile inlay, blue stitching and a titanium pin buckle. Titanium can also be found on the screw in crown assisting in a 100 metre water resistance. The release also impresses with domed sapphire crystal glass with double anti-reflective treatment on both sides and a soft-iron inner case which helps protect the movement from magnetic fields.
