Those that loved the smaller 41mm case size of the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph back in 2021 can revel in a new colourway as the Schaffhausen-based watch manufacturer launches the Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black Dial watch.
With watchmakers like IWC Schaffhausen, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly which model in their vast portfolio holds the flag as their linchpin. The IWC Big Pilot’s is certainly up there, as is their gorgeous selection of IWC Portugieser dress watches, but then you have designs like the iconic IWC Pilot’s Chronograph. A cornerstone of the IWC Pilot’s collection, these durable and sophisticated chronographs are inspired by the very first IWC pilot’s watches from the 1930’s and 1940’s which set the technical benchmarks for wrist-based aviation instruments for years to come. The designs are defined by their quintessential “tool” aesthetic complete with bold luminescent dial markers, a large knurled screw in crown and the legendary triangular index at 12 o’clock. Born with the same DNA and a new matte black dial, we’re welcomed to the latest IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch.
Technically speaking, the new IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black Dial watch is exactly the same as other 41mm editions in the collection offering a well-proportioned stainless steel case with a fixed, unadorned bezel, piston-style chronograph pushers and a large screw in knurled crown at 3 o’clock. The screw in crown is designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing thick pilot’s gloves and helps assist in a 100 metre water resistant rating. The case also features sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and is available on two straps. The first is a five-row link stainless steel bracelet and the second is a classic black calfskin leather band. It’s worth noting that with many of IWC’s latest releases, the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch boasts their EasX-CHANGE system which lets you swap around these straps for a compatible band incredibly easily.
This is the first time IWC Schaffhausen has revealed their 41mm IWC Pilot’s Chronograph with a traditional matte black dial and a stainless steel case. The display maintains all the instantly legible hardware we’ve come to expect from the Swiss brand’s aviation instruments including large white Arabic numerals, baton indexes and two sword shaped hands for the hours and minutes. All of this hardware, including the tip of the central chronograph seconds hand, is generously adorned with glow in the dark Superluminova. Three matching black subsidiary counters reveal the small seconds, 12 hour totaliser and 30 minutes counter, the former showcasing the only pop of colour in the entire design with a bright red hand. Completing the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 watch’s black dial is a date and date window at 3 o’clock bordered in by the IWC Schaffhausen logo.
Turning the IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 Black watch around and you can admire the IWC-manufactured 69385 automatic winding calibre through the sapphire crystal glass back. It is engineered from a total of 231 components, 33 of which are jewels, a column wheel mechanism and a bi-directional pawl winding system to ensure a healthy power reserve of 46 hours when fully wound.
