IWC 2021 Watches & Wonders Releases

Jewellery & Watch News

Kicking off the Watches and Wonders 2021 event is IWC Schaffhausen who have just announced a marvellous selection of new releases as part of their iconic Pilots collection. From a brand new Pilots Chronograph 41 to an all-new Big Pilots 43, a Big Pilots Perpetual Calendar and two incredible IWC limited edition Top Gun Mojave Desert watches, let’s take a look at these incredible new references in more detail…

IWC Big Pilots 43 Watch (IW3293)

IWC expands its iconic Big Pilots collection with a new IWC Big Pilots 43 watch under reference IW3293. Dressed in stainless steel and measuring to 43mm in diameter, the iconic cockpit design is available with a choice of a blue or black dial now with now date window or power display for an incredibly crisp and legible finish. There are three IWC Big Pilots 43 watches to currently choose from. First up is reference IW329301 which comes complete with a steel case, black dial and brown calfskin leather strap. Meanwhile, reference IW329303 showcases a steel case, blue dial and blue strap and IW329304 delivers the same blue dial but on a stainless steel bracelet.

With the Big Pilot’s Watch 43, we have returned to the extreme purity of the original observation watch designed more than 80 years ago and created a simple threehand watch with no other elements on the dial. Despite its reduced size, the 43-millimetre case combines a bold look with great wearing comfort,” says Christian Knoop, IWC’s Creative Director.

IWC Pilots Chronograph 41 (IW3881)

For many, chronograph function is a must-have in a pilots watch and the IWC Pilots collection is certainly no stranger to the complication. Now for smaller wrists, the IWC Pilots Chronograph is delivered in a reduced diameter of 41mm, still dressed in classic stainless steel and powered by the brand’s in-house 69385 calibre chronograph movement which is visible through a sapphire glass back. There are four references to choose from in the new IWC Pilots Chronograph 41 collection including reference IW388101 with a blue dial and blue calfskin leather strap and reference IW388102 with a blue dial and stainless steel bracelet. For those loving the current trend of green-dialled watches, reference IW388103 delivers a green face on a brown calfskin leather strap while IW388104 opts for a stainless steel bracelet.

Building on the success of our Spitfire chronographs from 2019, we are now introducing the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 into our classic collection. Thanks to the EasX-CHANGE system and a choice of straps, the chronographs can be adapted swiftly to different surroundings. Combined with the now 10 bar water resistant case, this versatility makes them perfect companions for adventures in the air, on the ground or by the water. To underline our ongoing commitment to innovation and technical excellence, we also fitted the new model with our in-house 69385 calibre chronograph movement, which is visible through a sapphire glass back,” explains Christoph Grainger- Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

IWC Big Pilots Perpetual Calendar (IW503605)

If there’s one complication that IWC has mastered, it is the Perpetual Calendar. Developed by IWC’s former head watchmaker Kurt Klaus, the perpetual calendar automatically recognises different month lengths as well as leap years and requires no manual correction until the year 2100. It also delivers a date display and power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock, the month at 6 o’clock, weekday and small seconds at 9 o’clock and a colourful double moonphase display at 12 o’clock which needs to be adjusted by only one day after 577.5 years.

This very mass of functionality is displayed once again in the new IWC Big Pilots Perpetual Calendar under reference IW503605 handsomely embraced within stainless steel with a nautical blue dial and blue calfskin leather strap to match. Powering the perpetual calendar function is the IWC manufacture calibre 52615 which alongside its Pellaton winding system and ceramic components ensures a healthy power reserve of 168 hours, or 7 days, and a frequency of 28,800vph. As part of the Big Pilots collection, the design maintains the iconic durable aviation aesthetic with a large screw in crown and instantly legible Superluminova Arabic numerals.

IWC Big Pilots Top Gun Edition Mojave Desert (IW506003 & IW503004)

For IWC watch collectors, the next two Watches and Wonders 2021 releases will certainly be of interest. Limited to only a select number of pieces, the two new Mojave Desert edition watches continue the series of military inspired watches with sand-coloured ceramic, dark brown dials and sand coloured rubber strap with textile inlay inspired by the barren and dry landscape of China Lake. Previously, we have seen the Mojave Desert Pilot Chronograph, but now the sandy-coloured pilots watch is delivered in a Big Pilot three-model under reference IW506003 limited to only 250 pieces and a Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar under reference IW503004 limited to 150 pieces.

The IWC Big Pilots Top Gun Edition Mojave Desert IW506003 watch measures to 46mm in diameter and comes equipped with a sand-coloured ceramic case, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and a dark brown dial with luminous sand coloured hands. Inside, the IWC manufacture calibre 52110 provides a 7 day power reserve presented on the dial at 3 o’clock. The IWC Big Pilots Top Gun Edition Mojave Desert Perpetual Calendar IW503004 comes in a little larger at 46.5mm to make room for the vast array of complications delivered on the same dark brown dial. Like the IWC Big Pilots Perpetual Calendar IW503605 mentioned above, the Mojave Desert Edition is powered by the calibre 52615.
