Introducing the Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition Watch

Jewellery & Watch News

The new Sinn U1 DS dive watch, limited to 500 pieces worldwide, uses a unique grinding machine to achieve its decorative dial. It features hands and hour markers coated in Super-LumiNova, a date window at 3 o’clock, a staggering 1000-meter water resistance and a case crafted from the brand’s exclusive supply of submarine stainless steel from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

In recent years, German watchmaker Sinn has drawn attention to its diving instruments made from submarine stainless steel. The Sinn U1 model is the company’s no-nonsense, over-engineered and remarkably practical dive watch. Sinn has focused its manufacturing efforts solely on functionality with the design of the U1. Whilst many dive watch aficionados feel this quality further adds to its appeal - others are still waiting for the arrival of a Sinn U1 watch with a bit more character and charm. That is until now… Meet the new Sinn U1 DS Grinding Dial Limited Edition watch – using the manufacturer’s diving-oriented features and materials but with an eye-catching decorative dial.

Designed with utmost purpose - that is the core message behind the Sinn U1. An engineered instrument watch that incorporates many of the German brand’s patented technologies like the TEGIMENT case coating, a diver’s bezel that has been tested, approved and certified by DIN and ISO, and of course, a case constructed from submarine stainless steel just to name a few. Continuing with these fundamental design codes, Sinn certainly keeps the practical element of the U1 DS watch alive but experiments with a new grinding dial technique. The grinding process is engraved onto the surface of the dial in an irregular yet intricate pattern, adding depth to the display and a unique feel to the overall design. This irregular application guarantees that no two pieces from the 500 limited-edition series will ever look the same and this is because the course taken by the engraving machine can never be repeated.

The raw metal colour of the watch’s dial has a rough surface that easily fits in well with the rest of the rugged dive tool’s aesthetic. Reflecting the different nuances of light - this rough metal surface looks different depending on the way the light hits its surface or indeed from the angle the dial is admired at. It can therefore appear in various metallic shades depending on the depth of the dial’s engraved surfaces.

Remaining true to the Sinn U1 watch, the base of the new limited edition dive watch measures 44mm and the surface of the submarine steel case and the crown has been bead blasted to give the watch that ‘used’ look. In its quest for a material that could withstand external influences whilst under extreme conditions of use, Sinn certainly found what it had been looking for in the German submarine manufacturer, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The company agreed to supply small amounts of their steel to Sinn exclusively for the manufacture of its watch cases. The very same steel is used in some of the world’s most advanced non-nuclear submarines, particularly the German Navy’s new submarine class 212. Experts at Sinn chose this material for two fundamental reasons: 1) it is remarkably resistant to seawater and 2) it promises the highest non-magnetic quality without any residual magnetism.

The unidirectional rotating bezel of the new Sinn U1 DS Grinding Dial watch is ratcheted with 60-minute markings that assist with keeping track of remaining dive time whilst underwater. To prevent the bezel from being accidentally knocked and increasing dive time, it can only rotate in the counter-clockwise direction. Furthermore, to ensure the bezel does not become detached whilst subject to the rough, unforgiving conditions of the ocean, the bezel is the captive type – firmly secured to the central section of the case. In addition to this, the limited edition Sinn watch is water-resistant to an astonishing 1000 meters and features a screw-down crown, sealed caseback and a sapphire crystal glass front to assist with a dry internal environment for the watch’s movement. It’s also worth noting that the 1000-meter water-resistant case meets the technical requirements for waterproofness set out by the DIN 8310 and the European diving equipment standards EN 250 / EN14143.

If you’re new to the concept of the crown positioned at 4 o’clock, this is a direction that Sinn has been taking many of its dive watches in, especially over the last few years. The decision to do so comes with several advantages. It mainly prevents the crown from digging into the back of the hand whilst using the watch alongside heavy diving gear but also makes adjusting the time easier and is thus more ergonomic. Lastly, it reduces the overall width of the watch case, which, like all dive watches is pretty hefty.

The new Sinn U1 DS Grinding Dial Limited Edition watch is topped with an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The back of the case is screwed in and conceals the performance of the Sellita SW 200 at work. This self-winding engine beats to the rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 38-hour power reserve.
