Seiko’s widely adored King Seiko KSK watch appears to have made a full return following its original release in 1965. The King Seiko KSK SJE083J1 Limited Edition, unveiled at the end of 2020, reminded us of the internal rivalry between King Seiko and Grand Seiko, who in opposing Japanese watch factories, battled it out to create a watch perfectly balanced in aesthetics and technology. Ultimately, it was Grand Seiko that survived and this sub-brand of Seiko remains a leader in luxury watch design today. However, now that King Seiko is back, including the two new King Seiko KSK 6L SJE089J1 and SJE091J1 watches, could more competition arise?
Since the return of the King Seiko watch two years ago, the Japanese watchmaker has reinvented the design in two different manners. The first was a series of limited editions models with faithful aesthetics and higher-end movements at their core. The second was a non-limited run of more affordable models, still relatively faithful in their execution with all the iconic characteristics there but delivered with less mechanical stature. For their latest instalment, Seiko delivers another two non-limited-edition models, still accessible in price, faithful in design and equipped with a premium in-house movement. What more could you want?
The new King Seiko KSK 6L SJE089J1 and SJE091J1 watches are a little larger than those we’ve seen since 2020, measuring to 38.6mm wide compared to 38.1mm. But this slight increase in width is nicely complimented by a thinner height of only 10.7mm, compared to the 11.4mm of previous. This is helped by a combination of slimmer lugs and lowered box-shaped sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment. The cases are still mirror-polished with smooth, fixed bezels, a small knurled non-screw locked crown and a screwed steel case back adorned with the King Seiko logo. The cases also ensure a 50 metre water resistance and for the first time at this price, come delivered on a stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet is constructed of seven links and a deployment clasp with push button release.
The new King Seiko KSK 6L watches come with two dial variations. The first is reference SJE089J1 with a crisp silver sunray brushed dial and the second reference SJE091J1 elects a classic smooth black display. Both dials utilise the original King Seiko logo at 6 o’clock and the iconic knurled marker at 12 o’clock. The silver dial presents the rest of the hour markers and the sword-shaped hands with bright polishing while the black dial delivers its hardware with a subtle hairline finish for a contrast against the smooth black backdrop.
As their name suggests, the King Seiko KSK 6L SJE089J1 and SJE091J1 watches are powered by one of the brand’s 6L movements. The Calibre 6L35 automatic winding movement provides hours, minutes, seconds and date function, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 45 hours. Seiko also attests the movement has an accuracy of 10/+15 seconds/day. As mentioned, these models are not limited and retail at £2,900.
