TAG Heuer have had many brand ambassadors over the years, but none quite so celebrated as Ayrton Senna. Considered one of the biggest names in motorsport, Senna sparked his passion for the course at just four years old when he was given his first go-kart, then years later, he won his first kart race. Fast forward another decade and this time, Ayrton Senna secured victories on a slightly more advanced course, this time debuting at Formula 1. From that moment, he dominated the sport, claiming all sixteen Grand Prix’s in 1988 and famously taking the chequered flag at the Austrian Grand Prix in 1991, claiming his sixth victory of the season and winning the Formula 1 World Championship.
In 1988, Ayrton Senna became a TAG Heuer brand ambassador with his unmatched energy and passion for the sport perfectly embodying the Swiss watch manufacturer’s own. The partnership lasted all the way up to Senna’s death in 1994 and it was shortly after that TAG Heuer decided it was time to honour the man in the best way possible, with his own special edition TAG Heuer watch. Every year, TAG Heuer celebrate Ayrton Senna’s achievements, immortalising his name and legacy with a TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna watch. This year is no different as TAG Heuer proudly present the new 2021 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Ayrton Senna Special Edition.
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Ayrton Senna Watch
As with all its predecessors, the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Ayrton Senna watch for 2021 celebrates the record-breaking legend of Ayrton Senna with a bold design worthy of the racetrack. Its aesthetic is largely defined by its striking black and yellow colourway inspired by Senna’s famous livery with a 43mm case engineered from black DLC coated stainless steel and paired with a matching black ceramic bezel accentuated by contrasting lines of yellow. The bezel is fixed and engraved with both the Senna logo and a white tachymeter scale. The 400 numeral on the bezel stands out more significantly as a nod to the speed yet to be reached in Formula 1 history.
The strap of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Ayrton Senna watch also points back to the legend with an embossed leather finish designed to look exactly like the S/EL that Senna used to wear on his TAG Heuer. It’s distinctive S-shaped design also evokes the shape of a tyre track. The strap also features bold yellow stitching and a black DLC coated stainless steel clasp with double safety push buttons.
The same black and yellow colourway continues on the dial with a dark grey anthracite backdrop sitting centre stage adorned with a yellow border, yellow counter edges, Superluminova accents and the Senna logo at 6 o’clock. Fuelling the indicators for the 1/10 second counter, 30 minutes counter and small seconds is a Swiss made quartz movement hidden behind a black DLC case back engraved with an image of the Brazilian driver’s iconic helmet and the words “SENNA SPECIAL EDITION”.
