Hands-on with the Oris ProPilot Altimeter Watch

Jewellery & Watch News

Oris’ legendary Altimeter watch returns, this time bringing with it an increased altimeter scale and a lighter and thinner carbon fibre case. Let’s take a look at the new Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch and all that it has to offer…

The Altimeter Dial

Oris released the original Big Crown ProPilot watch back in 2014 making history as the world’s first watch brand to create a wristwatch with an automatic winding movement equipped with a mechanical altimeter. The 2014 model was shortly followed by a special Rega edition in 2016 created in partnership with Switzerland’s air rescue service of the same name. Both of these designs became essential tools for pilots, mountaineers and hikers who wanted to accurately monitor the time, air pressure and altitude on a single dial. The new Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch is no different, largely defined by its highly legible altitude display but one that now indicates altitude up to 19,700 feet or 6,000 metres compared to the 15,000 feet and 4,500 metres of previous editions.

For the 2023 Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch, the altimeter scale is presented once again on a smooth black dial in a choice of feet or metres. Setting and activating the altimeter function is intuitively simple, you simply screw out the “ALT” marked crown at 4 o’clock which allows air to enter the case. Pulling it out again lets you set the yellow marker to the correct height which will travel around the dial as you climb or descend. The red marker surrounding the dial also indicates the air pressure. When you the altimeter is not in use, make sure you screw the crown back in as the watch will not be water resistant to 100 metres otherwise. The dial of the Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch is also adorned with large sword-shaped hands for the hour and minutes, a white-tipped seconds hand and large Arabic numerals all generously adorned in Superluminova. A date window sits at 3 o’clock.

The Carbon Fibre Case

Another new feature for the Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch is the case. Originally engineered from stainless steel, the 47mm case is now crafted from a single piece of carbon fibre composite allowing for a lightweight and more durable finish. The case has been engineered in partnership with 9T Labs, a Swiss firm based in Zurich, who claims the material is also heat and chemical resistant. The 47mm diameter is the same as before, but the case now asserts a slightly slimmer height of 17mm compared to the 18mm of the original. The case also boasts the same aggressive knurled bezel engineered from grey PVD-plated titanium, domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and a screw down case back engraved with a feet-to-metre conversion chart. As mentioned, when the crowns are screwed into the Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch you are guaranteed a water resistant rating of 100 metres. The case is completed by a green textile strap with brown leather lining closed by a grey-PVD plated titanium folding buckle with a micro-adjustment system

The Mechanical Movement

Powering the Oris ProPilot Altimeter watch is the Oris 793 automatic winding calibre. This is a new movement from Oris and one that trumps the one found in the Oris Altimeter watches from the past boasting an impressive 56 hour power reserve. There’s also a frequency of 28,800vph and functions for the hours, minutes, seconds and date.
