Oris continue with their ‘Change for the Better’ campaign with another charitable, limited edition partnership. The new Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson watch has been designed in collaboration with Canadian aerial firefighting organisation, Coulson Aviation, to bring to light the devastating effects of wildfires and the agency’s commitment to fighting them. The design of just 1,000 pieces does this through a fiery, orange ombre dial and a unique all-black carbon-fibre case created using an innovative 3D printing process.

The 3D Printed Carbon Case

At first glance, the case of the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition looks much like other 41mm models the Big Crown ProPilot family. There’s the iconic coin-edged bezel, knurled crown at 3 o’clock and double domed sapphire crystal glass, and yet there is a major difference here... The material used is not just steel with a black coating, but lightweight and scratch resistant carbon fibre which has been created by a 3D printing process. Produced at the ETH Zurich University in Switzerland, the case is milled from a block of carbon fibre layers all printed using a 3D printing machine. The layers of the carbon are clear to see viewing the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson watch from the side, each one beautifully clean and precise.

While the main bulk of the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition’s case is engineered from 3D printed carbon fibre, some of the more intricate elements are constructed in gunmetal PVD grey titanium such as the fixed bezel, crown and case back. All in all, the materials used here are remarkably robust and lightweight giving the watch a weight of only 65 grams. We’re still warranted a 100 metre water resistance while the strap is crafted from black textile and adorned with a bright orange underside to match the dial. The strap closes by a grey PVD folding buckle.

The Flame Orange Dial

If the dial wasn’t the first thing you noticed about the new Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition watch, then you should probably get your eyes tested. The brilliantly bold flame orange dial boasts a gorgeous gradient effect to evoke the equally dazzling shades seen in fire. The vivid orange bottom gently grows darker as it reaches the top half of the display. As if readability was ever going to be a problem, Oris have still ensured the dial is legible even in low lighting with Superluminova generously adorned across the white Arabic numerals and propeller-shaped hour and minute hands. All hands, including the white-tipped and straight seconds hand, is outlined in black. A black and white date window is also included at 6 o’clock.

The In-House Movement

Powering the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson watch is the Swiss watchmaker’s in-house Calibre 400 movement. This mechanical work of art is a huge draw for anyone already tempted by the aesthetics of this limited edition. It is Oris’ latest in-house manufacture movement boasting an anti-magnetic silicon escapement, a power reserve of 120 hours and a frequency of 28,800vph. We’re also promised 24 jewels, a chronometer-standard accuracy of -3/+5 seconds per day and a 10 year warranty.
