Jewellery & Watch News
Oris extends their Calibre 400 movement series yet again, this time wonderfully integrating a power reserve indicator into the back of a manual winding movement. The Oris Calibre 473 movement is placed inside the Swiss watch brand’s iconic Big Crown Pointer Date watch, an Oris collection mainstay since 1938, and maintains a remarkable 120 hour power reserve, chronometer-worthy accuracy, anti-magnetism and a 10 year warranty.
The Movement
Taking four years to develop, the new Oris Calibre 473 movement is an ingenious mix of beauty, precision and functionality, making history as the first manual winding movement in the Calibre 400 series and more significantly, the first Oris movement to reveal an integrated power reserve indicator on the back. Power reserve indicators are used to display how much power is left within a watch before it will need winding. Typically, the indicator is placed front and centre on the dial but for many, this can clutter what would have been an elegant, clean display. Oris have officially settled this issue, placing the 120 hour power reserve indicator on the movement visible through the case back.
The Oris Calibre 473 movement takes its base from the Oris Calibre 403 movement previously debuted back in 2019 on the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 403 watch. It delivers the same central hands for the hours, minutes and unique pointer date, a small seconds dial and a 5 day power reserve. We’re also promised a frequency of 28,800vph, high levels of anti-magnetism, an accuracy of 3/+5 seconds a day and a 10 year warranty. The new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch also comes with a 10 year recommended service interval.
The Case
Other than its extraordinary new movement, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch follows in the footsteps of previous Pointer Date models with a 38mm stainless steel architecture. The case is perfectly round with polished and brushed accents, tapering brushed lugs and a smooth fixed bezel. Domed sapphire crystal glass is used to protect the dial, adorned with a special anti-reflective coating for easy legibility, while the same glass is used to offer up a view of the manual winding movement and the power reserve indicator on the case back. There’s also a stainless steel screw-in security crown at 3 o’clock for a 50 metre water resistance.
The Dial
Coloured in a gorgeous shade of sky blue, the dial of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch also maintains all the design elements of its predecessors with retro-inspired Arabic numerals, a printed railway minutes track and raised indexes. All of this hardware is white and coated in glow in the dark Superluminova to match with the luminous inserts placed at the centre of the hour and minute hands. The pointer date hands stands out with its red tip and extends out to the white printed date ring around the edge of the dial’s circumference.
The Strap
Completing the Oris Big Crown Calibre 473 watch is a handsome olive brown leather strap crafted by Oris’ Swiss partner Cervo Volante. Oris has collaborated with Cervo Volante several times now, harnessing their prowess with sustainably sourced deer leather to create an equally sustainable range of leather straps. The strap is completed by a new Oris stainless steel butterfly folding clasp with a fine-adjustment system. The buckle allows you to make minor adjustments to the length of your strap as your wrist expands and contracts.
